My r9 280x looks dead to me but before I replace I wanted to make sure its not possible to save it,

Right the first pattern only ever shows up on that one screen, the second image those bars are always in that position, and appear on every other screen.
Sometimes the color of the lines change, but never the postion or pattern.

From what I have seen I suspect a faulty VRAM module but could it be anything fixable?

Solution
Yep, looks like a video RAM issue, if you see any artefacts in the BIOS screens it's a very, very bad sign because no drivers have been loaded at this point, so the system is running of the pure hardware and the video card BIOS display.

Obvious checks:
Reseat the card.
Swap video cables if possible, if not just try another output on the card and/or input on the monitor.

That card isn't very old, check your documentation, it should still be under warranty, if you have lost the invoice and purchased on line it's likely the details are lurking somewhere in your inbox.

As an emergency you can try the 'reflowing' or 'oven baking' trick (Google 'em) to get the card working again, it's somewhat hit-or-miss, won't cure a faulty chip and will...

Pretty much as I feared then! its the same on all outputs, I did get it to boot fine once, but it crashed after about 10 mins and had a terrible whining sound the whole time.
Thanks for the help/confirmation!
