Which of these 4 graphics card is the best for 1080p and 1440p? Which of these graphics cards is the most powerful enough to run The Witcher 3, Far Cry 4, Fallout 4, or GTA V at 1080p 60fps and 1440p above 30fps? Which of these graphics cards would you guys buy? BTW I want to upgrade my current graphics card the MSI R9 280X Twin Frozr 3GB.

That's a pretty bold, blanket statement. I have an 8GB 290X that I bought to replace my 970, and it overclocks just fine. I didn't buy a 390, is because there wasn't anything that I saw from the 390 that impressed me. I still haven't seen anyone with a decent enough overclock to beat my 970s....but the 290X I have now does. And handily.

For stock cooling and clocks, you may be right....I digress.

correct

a 290x is well worth the upgrade as you can get them for damn cheap nowadays because of people not knowing the 390's are just the same card with factory overclocks

I play fallout 4 1440p 60fps no issues ( with tessellation and shadow distance tweaks )

The 390 is actually the same core as the 290. The 390X has the same core as the 290X. The 390 performs similarly at stock clocks to the 290X, because it comes factory overclocked. Add that same clock to the 290X, and because of the more powerful core, it's faster.

Thus, the reason I bought the 8GB 290X....overclocked, it's a 390X, essentially.

At stock clocks, the 390 performs slightly better than the 290X.

As for firestrike...I haven't seen a 390 that impressed me yet. I never found one that'd beat my 970 scores. Both my cards....

970 and 290X runs

Both of my cards are / were underwater. That said, in my initial testing with the 290X, even on air, I was hitting low 15k graphics scores.

That would explain the clocks!

I am not disagreeing. All I was advising was that at stock clocks or normal oc, the 390 will match the 290x generally at cooler temps and less power. BUT if the 290x is cheaper then obvious choice. And once water cooling is involved all bets are off.

On a side note, I'm quite pleased I can get near your 970 at those clocks in firrstrike!

It's one of the best 970s out there.....there are only a handful of guys that have run higher graphics scores than that card did. Just saying, it's an exceptional 970. Certainly above the standard / norm.

I think the Sapphire VAPOR-X R9 290 4GB is a huge upgrade from the MSI R9 280X Twin Frozr 3GB. Take a look at this video. The Sapphire Vapor X R9 290 4GB completely blows the R9 280X (7970) out the water. Now do you guys think the Sapphire Vapor X R9 290 4GB is a huge upgrade from the MSI R9 280X twin frozr 3gb? Is the Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 4GB a huge upgrade from the MSI R9 280X Twin Frozr 3GB? The Sapphire VAPOR-X R9 290 4GB and Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 4GB should be huge upgrades from R9 280X and should play higher frame rates at 1440p than R9 280X.
