Is It Safe To Run It Without a Fan?

Hello everyone,

I have a GTX 770, Asus edition as part of my system's configuration installed and for some reason starting it up today it decided to make an extremely loud noise while running a game.

Two weeks ago it began making a grind heavy noise and so I oiled it for the first time. Both fans, all three bearings each. The card is almost two years old mind you. Anyway, it actually made the card tolerable and very quiet until this evening.

So today, despite the mentioned oiling it was making a very nasty sound and so I decided to give it another oiling. I did and when I fired up the computer again it was as loud as a gpu fan could possibly be, beyond the worst sounds I have ever heard any electronic make. I can't live with that noise, even with earplugs, even if I wait to order a replacement, it's just too nasty of a racket.

So I have jammed the left fan with a toothpick. The right fan still works and seems to keep a triple A 2013 game (the most advanced I'd ever run at this point) cooled at around 83 degrees even though I have it set to a max of 82 (was 79, but I bumped it up a tiny bit due to there only being one fan). It seems to spike to 84 then down to 83 degrees and the fan speed is of course naturally a little higher than I'm used to seeing hovering around 90 percent power. I have only tested it for a few minutes though... I'll play for a half hour or so and check if anyone has replied.

What temperature for the GPU should I start worrying about it being too hot?

What fan speed % should I start worrying that it's working too hard?

What could I do other then jam a toothpick into it in the meantime? (carefully and gently of course, just figuratively speaking)

What part would I need to order online to replace this really loud gpu fan? (I've never done maintenance to a GPU before aside from oiling the fans these two times in my entire life)

Could I get a newegg link to said part please? Just so I know what I'm looking for...

I really don't have $500 for a new GPU right now I'm going through family crisis. Thank you in advance for reading everyone, any help would be appreciated.

Remove the HSF cover, look at how the fans attach to the heatsink and if you are lucky, they might be standard 60-80mm fans. If you are unlucky, the fans are partially molded into the cover or HSF components and are completely proprietary. In the first case, simply replace the fan. In the other, your best option might be removing the old fans and zip-tying some new ones to the GPU.

If it was designed to run with a fan, then it's a bad idea running it without a fan.
By "83 degrees" I assume this is celsius. I would say that is pushing the limit for a GPU.

The technical specs say 98 degrees:
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-770/specifications

"What fan speed % should I start worrying" - I would say 95%. At 100 you will start having problems.

Just about any fan that fits will probably work in the mean time, just hook it up directly to a psu connector so that it runs all the time as it may not be compatible with the pinouts of the original fan.

*disclaimer: I do not know your exact situation and above advise may not work 100% of the time. If you smell anything funny, discontinue use immediately. Do not get a fan in your eyes.

Your VGA will die, if you continue gaming with failed cooling system.

You can propably replace those failed fans with some 80x80x10mm standard case fans
(that will require some modification of current cooling construction).

Or you can get aftermarket VGA cooler - something from Zalman or Deepcool.
Changing to afrermarket cooler would be more easy, but a bit more expensive option.

Thank you for the responses so far, guys.

The fans seem to be just standard 3 screw, ball bearing fans, but it's the size I'm wondering. I can't tell and feels like I'll goof up attempting to measure it. Here is a clear image that someone savvy with video cards and scaling things (like port and pin sizes) by eye could estimate what size fans these are:

The second fan is running perfectly fine. No noise. It's just the one fan that needs replacing.

$70 usd for an aftermarket cooler? If I'm going to be spending large amounts of money like that I'll just save up and invest in a new card.. I'm looking for a reliable replacement fan that will connect to the GPU the same way this card's fan does. $10 - $20 tops like a standard case fan.

On a side note, sooner or later the card is going to need to be replaced anyway. What do you reckon, another 770, a 960 or a 970? Thanks again for your time guys.

Well... I don't know what happened but I removed the toothpick a few minutes ago and it still sounded as bad as I previously described (no change), went to make a coffee, and when I got back to my room the gpu was relatively quiet for being at game speed.. That's weird.

1-st Replace Thermal paste between the GPU and Cooler(dont use cheep ones...buy something beter i use Arctic MX-4)
2-nd when u have noice trouble make custom curves for the fans...use 3-rd party programs like MSI-Afterburner to make custom fan speeds at diferent tempretures
3-if that doesn't help u have to replace the whole fans...simply check what fans will fit on the cooler (asume 2 fans 80mm/92mm will be fine but if u can put 2 120mm fans it will run cooler than ever and quiet enough.Attach fans with whatever u can to the cooler(if u dont how to ask someone elder)

I got the toothpick stopping the left fan again... Unbearable racket. These are the exact fans I'm sure of it:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/75mm-ASUS-GTX660-GTX670-GTX770-R9-270X-DCII-Dual-Fan-Replacement-40mm-5Pin-0-35A-/171577651813?hash=item27f2d33265:g:EXEAAOSw0vBUiSo4

I measured the fan opening and it is approximately 8 cm. I'm pretty sure that means the fans must be 75 mm.

Seems like a legit posting for new replacements fans for my specific video card. Probably cheaper to get that and pay someone I know that could swap it out for 10 bucks than to buy a whole new card but I'm eager to try out a 970. So much to consider.

Admirable

I second this^^

The only downside of this is that you usually connect those fans to a molex connector, so its always at max speed, it could be considered noisy for some people.

If the existing fans have two wires, you can simply splice the two wires fan to the GPU fan wires. If the GPU fan is three wires, get three wires replacement fan(s).
