bf4 and the witcher 3 running MUCH slower all of a sudden

I don't know what I did but two hours ago I was able to run the witcher 3 on at around 40-60 fps with a GTX 960 and an AMD FX-670K overclocked to 4.3 & sometimes to 4.5 GHz both games are now running TERRIBLE. The witcher 3 running at around 30 FPS, BF4 running at around 10-20. I didn't install anything bad. I have an antimalware and antivirus software, I ran both and no virus' or malware were found. I also did a full CC cleaner. Nothing helped. Any ideas?

Run the game then check your CPU temperature and core usage %. The same with your graphics card software. Find out what is the weak link is for starters.

Thermal throttling is the first thing that comes to mind, although it usually is not so sudden. Have you been using Witcher 3 for a long time, or is it something you have started using recently?

Just bought it about 4 days ago. Just now is when the problem started.

That supports the idea of thermal throttling. How do your older games play? Do they still run at the same speed?

70C is too hot for that CPU, and that CPU is a bit weak for Witcher 3.

Failure to reach target is a sign of themal throttling. It is possible that the motherboard is overheating at the VRMs too.

Not yet. It's only a possibility. What I am saying is that is SEEMS that you have an overheating problem. The CPU is too hot, and it seems that thermal throttling is taking place. You may need a new motherboard as well. CPU cooling will require an aftermarket CPU cooler.

Things you can do to check, is open your case up and move a case fan temporarily and zip tie it so it blows on the VRMs of your motherboard and see what effect that has.

I'd rather try to find out what is wrong be fore we throw your money at the problem.

Does BF4 run OK when the system is first turned on?

I'm off to work, so I'll be out of action until I finish in about twelve hours.

There are so many subtle possibilities. First I would check that my CPU cooler was seated properly and that the thermal paste was in good condition. Do you know how long ago the cooler was fitted?

I got it maybe about 2 or 3 years ago, and I have no idea how old the computer is.

OK. If it's a new problem, then I'd want to replace the paste on the cooler with new, good stuff. That will eliminate bad paste or cooler installation as a possibility. Let us know how it works.

I'm pretty sure I went too high on the voltage and it I guess "underclocked" itself to preserve it's lifetime.
