This is one of those questions where everyone will have a different answer, so I can only give my opinion.
In my mind, USB hubs are like pizza, a majority of them are good and will do the job. My only requirements for certain hubs (especially USB3 ones) is that it has it's own power source.

USB ports offer two options for you, power and data. If you have power taken care of, this allows the port to focus more on data. You find better performance in those types of models that have their own power supply. That and it keeps the ports from going dead faster.
