Is an XFX XTR 550W (80 Plus Gold) power supply enough for Gigabyte's GTX 970 G1 Gaming? I mean comfortably, not just barely. CPU will be an i5-6500.

I'm not really experienced at calculating this stuff, so I don't know how much 'headroom' you're supposed to leave. The Outervision PSU calculator gave me 422W as the recommended wattage, but then recommends a 600W model at the end. Plus I have no idea how much more a G1 consumes compared to a refence 970.

So, is a 550W XFX definitely okay, or "you can probably get away with it"?

edit: not planning on overclocking beyond anything Gigabyte's done to the card by default

The XFX XTR is a very high quality power supply and 550 watts is comfortably enough for the GTX 970 + Good amount of OC.

600 watts is I think Nvidia's recommendation so that low quality power supplies below 600 watts are avoided for use.
Something is funny here, Outervision tacks on a 50W safety margin regardless of the PSU size. Going from 422W load to 600W recommended doesn't fit, I believe that you are looking at the Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) size and not the PSU size. If the load is 422W, the 550 will do just fine. This would even give you a little room for overclocking but not too much.

Well, I gave the calculator this list: http://outervision.com/b/HF2eCx

(or something like it, cause this time the recommended wattage came out slightly different)

Maybe it's just that the 600W Bronze is cheaper on Amazon than a 550W Gold...? Anyway, thanks for your answer.
