Hello there, i will be really grateful if someone could help me with this problem

So, i bought a CPU [Core 2 Quad Q9650] used from amazon without heatsink/fan.
i have installed it along with the old CPU's heatsink/fan and it worked (after a whole day of struggling and black screens...)
but the problem i'm suffering with now is the loud noise and scary high temperature
(Web browsing... 50C - Playing HD videos, After Effects... 80C)

now i think i need a new CPU cooler that can handle my new one? what do you think?

Old CPU : Core 2 Duo E6550
New CPU : Core 2 Quad Q9650
Motherboard : Pegatron Corporation 2A73H

Before you say it, i am sure that i've installed the Heatsink correctly with thermal paste inside!

This is the LGA 775 socket we are talking about BTW

yep, after i cleaned it, i put on a new thermal paste
i found the thermal paste sweating inside after i replaced the CPU with the old one yesterday (i was using the new CPU the whole past month)

What cooler are you using?

sorry i couldn't find it on google and i don't know its name
it came with the E6550 Core 2 Duo it's old, it work perfect with the E6550 but not good at all with the Q9650
i'm using it right now with the E6550 Core 2 Duo and everything is just fine no noises and temp is normal 37C
thank you for your time BTW

When you wipe off the old paste from the heatsink, did you use proper lint-free material? If not, there's a chance its the one causing it. btw did you also check your thermal paste? is it still working, did you apply too much or too less? Anyways, I suggest you use the new cooler the processor came with and see if there is anything unusual with it too!.

i used a soft napkin i think that should do the work
thermal paste, i'm not sure if i did too much or less but when i got the heatsink off i found a little bit of sweaty thermal paste so i might need to redo it correctly this time (good idea tho)

also when you said *use the new cooler* did you mean the heatsink or thermal paste cause i think they are both called cooler, anyway the new CPU came alone in a bag without any other accessories that's why i had to use the old heatsink i had no choice

i have another question if you don't mind, if i use alcohol (perfume) while cleaning the heatsink will that cause any damage ?
thank you for your reply mate, i appreciate that

Sorry, I forgot your "without heatsink" part. I think you should check your clock speeds, to see if its normal. The "loud noise' you're referring to here seems to be the stock cooler & you should also check where you plugged your cpu cooler to, a normal 3-pin or cpu controlled 3-pin. If you plugged it in the "cpu_fan", the reason its making a noise will be that there is something wrong with the cpu (considering its used) or wrongly configured which drives the cpu hot and the fan is attempting to cool it with higher rpms and is making the noise in the process. BTW I'd like to know what you mean by sweaty thermal paste.(like watery?)

yes it's kind of watery i'm sure it's not normal it's like thermal paste got melted

the place where i plug the cpu cooler, i didn't understand what you mean there is only one place in the motherboard near the CPU place and it's a 3-pin, it's because i's an old motherboard there are no extra features

clock speed and utilization all normal, from what i can tell when the utilization is up 30% it start making a real load noise when i close some apps the noise goes off to silence, when utilization is up temperature should get high too but my problem is temp is always high even if i'm doing noting, and when i do something like web browsing after around an hour the fan go crazy, it's exactly like what you said, the fan is attempting to cool it with higher rpms and is making the noise in the process that's what made me say i need a new heatsink that can handle my new CPU.

i hope the problem is not in the CPU considering that there is a scratch above it, i hate regretting decisions i take but buying a used piece of electronic from another country is just a baaad idea

About the watery thermal paste, thermal paste is normally liquid but fairly viscous. It's entirely possible the thermal paste was so crappy it broke down under the 80C+ temperatures. Did you use any aftermarket paste or just whatever came with the heatsink? If it's the latter, I'd say try some Arctic Silver 5 Polysynthetic Silver. 3.5G tube (one application of thermal paste is roughly 1 gram) costs less than 10 bucks and it's practically as good as it gets for thermal paste. If you used bad paste and it broke down it could've stumped its effectiveness, explaining the temperatures.

Good point, the one i used is a 1$ thermal paste so it should be crappy
Arctic Silver 5 Polysynthetic Silver, sadly i can't get that one thanks to my country/city
i will try a different one hopefully it work it's also silver (if color matter) they say it's better...

Meh just link the online store of wherever you're buying from, I'll check if they have any good pastes.
