hello people of tom's hardware,

so i have this problem for a while now and i tried alot of things to make it go away but nothing worked.

The dwm.exe just kills the frames of windows in a second it mostly happens after half an hour between 30 minutes and an hour and then the process just skyrockets out of nowhere to 20%...

and i don't know what do anymore i tried things i saw when googling for it but nothing helps, but when its 20% i have to goto "services" and restart the process and then it will work fine for the rest of the day so if someone could help me with this problem i would really appreciate it!

hope you have a nice day!

It responsible for windows graphics like aero themes using glass affect etc.

Some with windows 8 and possibly 10 report this exe hogging cpu resources. I'm running windows 7 because i prefer it because i feel windows 10 is especially unstable and affects gaming more, however this is my opinion based on threads regarding windows 10 lagging and it would be interesting to see dwm.exe cpu usage in such a case.

Other points reported by others is that Avast and Avg have been known to cause dwm to increase cpu usage. I'm using Kaspersky and thus far its setting is "00" in task manager. Still further on others report logitech set point and outlook increasing it, so logically if a person is running windows 8, with avast or avg, using outlook...

Personally I noticed that AVG and AVAST have a more graphically appealing look to their interface while Kaspersky is rather bland, so this could be the reason why Kaspersky opted for the "bland look", was to ultimately bring down dwm cpu usage, however I'm speculating based on research after reading microsoft forums with regard to this issue.
