As an artist have always figured Epson to be "The Artist's Printer."

**Printer is underused but was working fine. Upgraded to SSD & Yosemite from Snow Leopard (don't ask musicians about El Capitan -none of our external M-audio sound cards are supported).

*Preferences pane shows the printer.
**Tried to print and get message to replace ONE ink cartridge. All are genuine and this particular set were provided FREE by Espon because a replacement set I bought only registered half full.
* Replaced the cartridge and Print Utility showed it as full but gave "!" exclamation point on in supply level while showing it as full.
*Restarted computer -Print Utility gave error msg. that ALL INK needs replacing -while showing full.
*HOURS LATER (LoL as I'm sure you are all familiar with time used) after doing every troubleshooting step I could find, including RESEATING all ink cartridges, I wrote Epson.

They continue to be very good at providing support long after warranty expires. Here is what they recommended:

Thank you for contacting Epson regarding your Epson Stylus Photo 1400. It is my pleasure to respond to your inquiry.

For the error, please do the following:

1. Unplug the printer from the computer.
2. Restart the printer and verify that it powers back on with a green power light.
3. Open your "System Preferences" (Apple Symbol at top left-hand corner of screen)
4. Click on "Printers & Scanners"
5. Remove the printer from the list by clicking on it clicking the "minus" icon at the bottom of the printer and scanner list
6. Download the latest driver package from Apple from the following link:
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1792?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
7. Restart the computer after the installation is complete.
8. Go back to your "Printers and Scanners" list.
9. Reconnect the printer to the computer
10. If the printer is not back in the list already, please click the "+" icon to add it back in.
11. Choose the USB connection type when selecting the printer to add.
12. You should now see your ink levels either in the "Supply Levels" tab in "Options and Supplies" or in the Epson Printer Utility which you can access through the "Utilities" tab in that same menu.

I did this and the Print Utility no longer showed the printer as connected.
-HOURS of troubleshooting later - LoL -I wrote back to Epson (BTW: I included screen shots of all error msgs.) and even said it's a shame it's stopped working & I'm hesitant to buy a complete set of 6 cartridges($125.00 or more) because the new model Epson has replaced the 1400 with is only
$299.00
_____________________________________________________________________________

Just now I got an email from Epson asking me to check Print Options to see that the driver version is 9.0 -it is ...and miraculously, after leaving the printer off overnight it today is showing as connected (with the green dot beside the word). However it still wants ALL INK cartridges replaced -two I replaced last night with new free ones that Epson sent me (as described at the beginning of this post).

I would like to hear what you all have to say. I realize this is a low end printer and that it's underused, however ...before retiring I worked out of the country for up to 6 months at a time as a performing musician and since my first Epson printer in 2000 only once had an issue with ink drying up (Stylus Photo 785 EPX) which was solved by replacing it's single colour cartridge & black one.

Thanks.

Thanks. I'll see what their photo line offers in the way of CD printers. xoxo :)
