so once i have run the scan how do i know if it is compatible?

Compare the type (i.e. DDR3), speed (i.e. 1600mhz), module size (i.e. 2gb, 4gb), and voltage (i.e. 1.5v, 1.35v)

The information will be shown on the screen, like:
Max memory: 8gb
No. os memory slots: 2

Which means it will accept up to a 4gb module per slot. You can use the "recommended" upgrades to see what speeds and voltage is acceptable. They wont offer a module that wont work in your motherboard.

Take the info and compare it to the modules you were looking to buy.
