I recently just installed msi and ran it for the first time. all i did was display some fps and cpu temps on the screen under the monitoring settings. does msi automatically change any settings because it seems my cpu is running 10-20 degrees hotter now...

I didnt touch any other settings.

^ Agreed. @djreej, the good news is that your computer has been thermal throttling itself, which means that as soon as you solve this problem, your computer will run much faster. But you must deal with this issue ASAP. If you you've already ordered a new cooler, then it'll come with thermal paste as well. If not then you need to obtain thermal compound as soon as possible to resolve this issue. No way around that.

You mean MSI afterburner? In which case no it only reads the various sensors equipped on you GPU/CPU. Be careful as most CPU's have multiple sensors (to read each core for example) so it may be reading your Tcase temp, or some other CPU related temp.

this is BULLSHIT

my temps enver reached this high now all I do is load up a game to the menu and exit and i reach max temps of 100 degrees.

all since i downloaded and installed msi afterburner.

are you sure when u open msi ab for the first time it doesnt mess with fan speeds or anything?? this is not how it was before i installed and opened it

and when i say 100 degrees i mean ALL CORES 100 degrees

@djreej, it's not MSI afterburner. The problem is your CPU cooling. When you installed your cooler, did you use thermal paste? Whether you did or not, I suspect it wasn't applied properly. Please let me know and I'll be happy to talk you through it, or you can search thermal compound on YouTube and view for yourself.

You need to clear the old paste (if there is any) from the top of your CPU and the bottom of the CPU cooler with isopropyl alcohol. You need to apply paste to the top of the CPU. It should be about the size of a long single grain of rice. Even though you're using the stock cooler, and I agree it's a great idea to upgrade it, even the stock cooler shouldn't reach 100 C if it was installed correctly with thermal paste.

What I've written is correct. MSI afterburner is an overclocking utility and hardware monitor for GPU's which when first installed does nothing other than read your systems settings and presents what it has read in the applications UI. It is up to the user to change those settings, MSI does nothing without the users input and all this applies only to GPU's.

It has no controls to change CPU vcore or any other CPU setting, so whatever your problem is, its not down to Afterburner.

Have you ever monitored your hardware before? If not how do you know your system has not always suffered these temps?

i monitored it prior to downloading msi afterburner and it was max 80-90 degrees with hw monitor, then i used msi afterburner and all i did was display the temps on the screen under monitoring settings. now when i look at mwmonitor it maxes out at 100 degrees

MSI is a GPU overclocking and monitoring utility, there is nothing to say it is calculating the correct CPU temperature based on the algorithm used in actual CPU monitoring utilities which is as follows:

Each core on a processor has a digital thermal sensor (DTS) that reports temperature data relative to TJMax which is the safe maximum operating core temperature for the CPU. As your CPU heats up, your Distance to TJMax will decrease. If it reaches zero, your processor will start to thermal throttle or slow down so maximizing your distance away from TJMax will help your computer run at full speed and more reliably too.

What rcald2000 is telling you is correct. you need to resolve your CPU overheating problem, whether its 90° or 100° doesn't really matter, its way too high for any CPU. You can berate the fact that MSI is telling you something you don't want to see all you like, but it doesn't change the fact that you need to resolve your CPU overheating issue.

Yup i am working on it, but i didnt get those temp readings from msi i got them from hwmonitor. and actually msi showed lower readings than hwmonitor. i hope once i put on new paste and if this cooler fits possibly this can fix the problem.
