I have LENOVO 2111C3U ThinkCentre M78. It came with 1 4 gig chip of samsung memory. I bought 2 8 gig chips of crucial memory (based on their tool recommendation). When I try to use all 3 chips, I eventually get blue screen of death errors. It takes a few days or weeks, but it eventually crashes. 4 gig by itself ok, 8 gig by itself ok, but not all 3 together. Crucial tech support said "we can't guarantee compatibility with other brands of memory. This is due to them being made differently.". They were very firm and repeated this answer 3 times.

so do I just toss the samsung chip? I have tried a few variations of what slots I used, but I did not take notes. I have the 2 8 gig chips in dim 0 and dim1, which are closest to the cpu and that works fine.

Solution
Try a BIOS update. See if moving the RAM sticks in the slots help. Aside from that, there is not much difference between 16 and 20 GB of RAM and running the way you are in a mixed dual channel and single channel mode is not efficient anyway.

Just use the two 8 GB sticks, sell the 4 gb or keep it for another system.

I don't want to do a bios update. I like your last idea, just stay with the 2 sticks.
