Is 12 GB Possible with 2 RAM Sticks?

Okay so I have a GigaByte GA-H61M-DS2 motherboard, which has 2 memory slots. I currently have 1 stick of 8GB RAM (1x8) and my PC is constantly hitting the ceiling. My friend has offered to give me 1x4 GB stick for free, since I only have 1 slot available. Would I be aloud this? I'm using Windows 10 64 bit, on a 64bit machine.

TL;DR - Can I have 12GB RAM by using one stick of 8GB and one stick of 4GB?

Thank you in advance.

I'm saying that IF the sticks will play together (there is never a guarantee that sticks from different packages will play/work together) then they can run in 'flex' mode where *GB total runs in dual and the odd 4GB in single, it has little to no ill affect on performance

So you're saying it will work but not as well? Because the 8GB stick is a random brand I bought, don't even remember, and the 4GB stick will be a Corsair Vengance which will probably be faster.
