Up until a few days ago, My internet was working fine at around 40 mbps down and 5 mbps up. Starting last night, my ping while playing csgo went north of 250 and wouldn't come back down. I did some speed tests and found that on my pc (using powerline ethernet) I was getting 2 down and .5 up and about 80-150 ping and on my phone connected to the router I was getting about 80-100 ping and 10 down and 1 up. I have tried unplugging everything, resetting everything and somehow about an hour ago the problem was fixed even though the last time i tried resetting everything was about an hour before that. Then like 20 mins ago everything went bad again and it is currently in a very bad state. Our router is asus rt-ac68u and the powerline is tplink.

No new devices for the past few weeks. I will test that speed from the modem now and come back with results. Thanks for the quick response!

Ok so im not sure I did this right but when I plugged the laptop into the modem the internet didn't work. When I plugged it directly into the router I got speedtest pings of 70 and 140 and download of 40 and upload of 3. I normally get around 20 ping and 60 down and 5 up when im plugged directly into the router

EDIT: forgot to add this, but I ran a command prompt pinging my router as someone said in an older thread and found spikes of 400 ms ping to the router while playing CS:GO. This makes me believe it is the router at fault. Also, not sure if this is related, but when I was taking a look at the router a few mins ago I found that the ASUS light normally on the front of the router was randomly turning on and off. Could this mean anything like a loss of power or frequent failures causing high latency within the network?

The modem is the one we got from the cable company like 5 years ago. I updated the firmware for the router and did a factory reset and the internet seems fine for now... I'll check back tomorrow and see if it is still ok because the ping spikes were intermittent and this could just be a coincidence. I don't know what could have caused the issue with the router because all I really changed was the port forward settings because I used to run several game servers. Anyways, thanks for the help!

Ok so I factory reset and updated my router last night and everything was fine for a bit, but now it is back to its old self now. 135 ping on speed test but now I'm getting 30 mbps down and 4 mbps up

Try the Modem to laptop again, if it is an older cable modem, they get a MAC address lock. You'll need to turn it off and disconnect everything from it and left it set unconnected for 15 ish minutes. This time lets the cap's in the modem bleed off and the cable companies system will drop the MAC address association.
Plug it all back up with your laptop connected, give it 5 or 10 minutes to come fully online and check it, speed test... Try other things for 15 - 30 minutes and see if it drops off.

If you see it failing or has less speed than it should, I'd get a new Modem from the Cable company... They should swap it for free, you just need to go there with it and proof who/where you are. Then hassle thru the setup. They will offer you "an upgrade" to an all-in-One Modem Router... Up to you, if you want to abandon the old router you have.

Ok I'll try that out now. The router we have is new while the modem is old.

Ok so I got this working and got perfect speed test results with 25 ping meaning my router is the problem? Any ideas on how to fix it or should I look into getting a refund?
