Are physical mice not as productive as touchpads?

I've always used a single laptop, but I'm thinking about getting a second monitor and then I'd have to buy a keyboard and mouse to use with it.

But I had the thought:
Aren't external mice that aren't touchpads slower to use?
Imagine you're typing on your keyboard and then have to click on something on the screen. You have to then take your hand off the keyboard, put it on the mouse next to the keyboard, and then move the mouse and click, and bring your hand back to the keyboard.
That seems pretty slow to me and seems like it would slow your efficiency.

Now the alternative:
You use one of those keyboards with a touchpad built in.
So imagine you're typing on your keyboard and then have to click on something on the screen. You then can just move your thumb downwards to move the mouse and can then click with just your thumb as well. You can then immediately reposition your hand slightly so your hand is back to normal on the keyboard.

This seems far more efficient to me, but it seems like people everywhere use keyboards and then an external mouse.
Thoughts?

Solution
You could just place the monitor elevated behind your laptop that way the monitors are same distance away, just need to adjust the monitor in settings to be above and not to the side.

EDIT: You can also always buy an external touch-pad if you are not comfortable using a mouse http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Rechargeable-Touchpad-Multi-Touch-Navigation/dp/B0093H4WT6

A few additional milliseconds, that it takes to grab a mouse, get compensated immediately by how much faster you can point it to wherever you want compared with a touch pad. Personally for me they were always frustrating to use.
Perhaps using something like a ten key less or a 60% keyboards are more efficient if you type a lot, and switch to your mouse just every now and then.

How is a mouse faster for pointing? Is it jsut because it can travel farther in a single movement than a touchpad?

Because if I get a monitor, I'd want the monitor and laptop to be side by side. So if I just use the keyboard on the laptop, I have to reach over to my laptop and then turn my head to look at my monitor.
If I just have another keyboard, I can put the keyboard in front of my and keep my laptop and monitor side by side and can easily look/use both without having to turn too much.

Mouse requires a lot less effort even when it comes to simple operations like selecting different files in a folder, or moving a window from one monitor to another. I know a few people that are pretty accurate with a touch pad. It's a nice solution if you don't have enough desk room for a mouse so it became their preference. But if you're using two monitors you need something to get the cursor across without extra movements. I can't see myself being productive without a nice mouse with some extra buttons for complex hotkey combinations.
