Hi , I recently bought a new laptop for gaming , I get good fps but in random ocasions fps drop from 150 to 40 for about 20 seconds then they go up again, tried severall games and happen to all .. I monitored with severall softwares (AIDA 64, speedfan .. ) and it's my CPU clock speed that goes from 3293MHz to 797 MHz then goes up again for no apparent reason .

My Temperatures Are under 45ºC while playing

Already tried High performance and disabling Power saver features .

Tried old nvidia drivers and latest .

My specs are :

i7-6700HQ @ 2.60GHz

8GB RAM

Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M

I'm a developper and bought a gaming laptop to play some games and relax , but in the past week I'm doing what I do every day , solving problems .

PS: Recently had to buy another charger for the laptop , it's from HP slitly different in size from the original but input , output is the same as the original .

Solution

I dont really understand when you mean 'tried with battery?" Do you mean you didnt have it plugged into a charger? Because if it only occurs when a charger is plugged in, then we have identified the source of the issue.

These said lag spikes are usually a result of a computer being overheated. Theres quite a few reasons your laptop could do this, one being you have a dysfunctional fan in there, two being that you are just getting to high of FPS. Try locking your in game FPS to sixty. You will not see a change in speed being we dont see much faster then sixty fps with our own eyes. Try the second solution before the first.

Thank you for replying .

My temps are good , so overheating is not the issue . I already tried to limit fps , Settings very low in game and cpu core speed goes down randomly .

I tried playing with battery and the problem won't happen , could it be the charger ? the input/ output is the same as the original

Well now dont go returning your computer, try buying a new charger, it could be as simple as that, you could also be having issues where the battery supply to the CPU is to little? Do some searching on the internet to see if anyone else has this problem.
