I was wondering if these would bottleneck and how bad it would be. I want to play GTA 5, BF4, CS:GO, Star Wars Battlefront, Skyrim, and, League of Legends. How is this going to run those games? Is there going to be a lot of bottleneck?

XFX R9 280 3GB
Athlon X4 860K

Solution

defintely a good pairing mate, youll get playable fps even at ultra settings on most games.
Id generally go with these estimates.

bf 4 & gta 5
-----
ultra 30-40 fps
high 40-50 fps
medium 50-60 fps

the rest cs:go,SWE battlefront, skyrim,LOL - youl be able to run ultra & get close to 60 fps - those games are pretty easy on both cpu & gpu.

Thanks. Do you know how much it will effect performance? How much FPS would I be getting on like medium-high settings?

So is it playable or not? Also would there be less bottleneck with the GTX 960 and the X4 860K or the same?

You should seriously overclocking it, if you haven't yet done so. On my secondary PC, I use a G3258 (at 4.4GHz) with an R9 380. It suffers barely any bottlenecks. Every game I have played so far on it has run smoothly. GTA V for example, runs at a constant 50-70 fps on high preset settings, at 1080p.

I have not overclocked it yet, I'm not sure if it is safe for my build :/

Could you give me more detailed specs of your build please? Then we can see whether the overclocking capabilities are any good (it's unlocked, and much like other AMD cpus, it is easily overclockable anyway).

So you're suggesting that you need a motherboard with heatsinks for VRMs in order to overclock? I have a overclocked FX 6300 and G3258, both at 4.4/4.5GHz. The motherboards I use for them don't cost double the price of my CPUs, but they are both stable. As long as you don't get a super crappy one, you should be fine.

Also have you realised that the i5-4460 costs around double the price of the X4 860K? Though the performance difference may be quite considerable, the Athlon is also good value for money.

If only it was an Intel stock cooler...
Also I'm guessing £13 for something like a Raijintek Aidos won't be too much for a 212 Evo-standard cooler.

I actually have a stock Intel cooler that came from my dad's build awhile ago. It's not even open.

Wow really? Everyone says something different about these paired together, I honestly don't know what to think anymore. But I'm going to trust you on this one. Thanks for the help!

So it probably would be best it if I upgraded to an i5 in the future?

do not beleive any youtube stuff ...please

i had a x4 860k and had a lot of freeze issues , i am not an intel fan at all , i just picked the best hardwares
i had a fx 4100 who burn out my mobo , get the fx 6300 and have a low performances issues in all kind of task and finally the x4 860k

so i do not want to suggest the x4 860k even to my worst enemy

its all about balance on your personal budget mate
the 860k & the 280 are boith firmly mid range at best

the 860k is capable of between 40-70 fps on the latest titles
the 280 is capable of 40-60 fps at high on the latest titles.
theyre both entirely acceptable & playable results imo for a fairly budget system (certainly better than the ps4 & xbone)

changing to an i5 you'd still be sitting at the same fps because the 280 isnt capable of any more performance than above.

obviously the i5 is a better cpu but it costs 2.5x as much as the 860 & is roughly 40% faster not 250%.
