Not really looking for anything more. Just going to swap my board and cpu in my htpc. It has a q9550 atm.. I do have a controller and a few games installed that I would like to play from my couch.

Hmm, more of a side grade. Tom's puts your CPU slightly below the 860K and a tier above the Pentium.

Q9550 isn't that out of date.

For an HTPC, I would go with the pentium, not necessarily the anniversary edition, or a low end i3, just for power savings.

Well, the Pentium has integrated graphics. The Athlon x4 does not have graphics. Does your HTPC have a video card or are you planning to use integrated? If integrated and you wanted the AMD system then you'd want to get an A-series APU (the athlon x4 is basically an APU without graphics).

Why are you changing from the q9550? Is it because you are using some kind of crummy mobo graphics?

If it has a GTX 580 in it then leave it alone. The q9550 is perfectly fine for an HTPC. Either the Pentium or the Athlon X4 likely won't make any difference in an HTPC when you are using a 580. Save your money up for something more robust if you must upgrade.
