Is a Single GTX 980 enough for maxed out (ultra) settings at 1440p or should get 980 Ti?

Hi, im sure you've read this thread a dozen of times, but there are so many diffrent opinions out there so im looking ones for my own. I will replace my 144hz 1080p Asus monitor for a 144hz G-Sync 1440p Dell monitor and i've prepared myself by getting a GTX 980 SC from EVGA, (i've read that for games like GTA V at 1440p at maxed out settings i'd still be getting +50 fps even with a 970, but im wondering if i should get something more future proof (like a 980 Ti), since later games like Assassins Creed Syndicate run smoothly with the 980 ultra settings but the 980 cant handle 1440p on that game, so what would you recommend me? i'll be getting the 1440p g sync monitor from dell on 2 months, thanks in advance

Yes, a single 980 will run 40+ at ultra in most new games at 1440p. Here's a Witcher 3 bench example with a lot of...
Long story short, you will need TWO 980Ti cards in SLI to run 1440p at ultra quality settings and get at least at least 120FPS consistently. To put things in perspective, I have overclocked 970s in SLI driving a 1440p monitor and can only run Witcher 3 an average of 75FPS with everything on/maxed except Hairworks. Other games I'm around 100FPS plus or minus 10-15FPS depending on games (BF4, FC4, Crysis 3, Project Cars, DiRT Rally). My SLI rig is about 10% above a single 980Ti in performance.

Finally, since you are 2 months away from buying a monitor, and we are only 4-5 months away from Nvidia's 9xx series replacement (Pascal), I'd seriously think about waiting to see what the new 970 and 980 replacements will be capable of (and their price point). When the 970 came out, people who had just months before bought a 780Ti were really hating it considering they paid $700 for a card that a $350 card that nearly equaled or whooped it in some games in factory overclock variants. Same with buyers of 680s who got burned with the 770s that were $100 cheaper and faster. Still, none of that is any guarantee of anything. I think Nvidia heard from their ticked off 780Ti customers loudly after the 970 & 980 releases.

hi, thank you for replying, ok so I was also consedirng that option, I think ill just wait until pascal since we are not that far, however consider this: what if i just want my games to run at just 60fps 1440p and not necessarily +120 fps as you mention before (which actually make me kind of dizzy in First person shooters lol), will my single 980 be capable to run at at least 40 fps games like GTA V, Bioshock Infinite, Assassins Unity and Syndicate, Rise of Tomb Raider, MGS: V at 1440p at ultra settings with just a few (or if its possible any) tweaks on graphics (like you did with the hair on the Withcher 3) ?

Yes, a single 980 will run 40+ at ultra in most new games at 1440p. Here's a Witcher 3 bench example with a lot of various video card power comparisons at 1440p. You can scroll through other game benchmarks in this link as well:
