Wireless speeds vs wired

Hi. I have att gigapower internet so I'm paying for 1000 up and down. On my wired computer I do get my full speeds and it works fine. However when I go to my room and speed test my internet wirelessly my speeds go anywhere from 40-60 download. How fast should my wireless speeds be for what I'm paying for and are these speeds far too low? (They seem way low to me sometimes my videos buffer on wireless) thanks!!
 
This is extremely subjective because it will depend on how many others are around you using wireless and even more so how many are one teh same channel you are on.

you are always going to loose some due to standard interference, walls, appliances, radio's, wireless phones ect.. but if you live in a building complex it gets much much worse. if your router is fighting with other routers to put out it's signal the speed drops dramatically.

Metageeks's inSSIDer will help you choose what channel is the best for you. This one is free but they also have a one ( can't remember the name off my head but is on there web page) that will help find what is interrupting your signal that you would have to pay for.

Start with this free program and go from there. the exact number (Mbps) also will depend on your router. As far as I am aware there is not a wireless router that will do 1000 Mbps on one frequency. SO this being said what exactly is your wireless router?
 
First off, the ISP is not responsible for whatever speed you getting at room x. All they are responsible for is the speed at the modem. WIFI, you are sharing the airway with everybody else in the house using wireless, and even YOUR NEIGHBORS, am not kidding.

It's basically an AT&T gigapower modem. I get really average speeds like 50 Mbps download when I am paying for amazing internet. I expected like 150 down at least and I'm not even close to that

No one else in my house uses the Internet in any way that would use a lot of speed the most my parents do is like web browse and text they don't use much it's mainly me and I'm getting pretty slow speeds
 


Again what is the make model and model number of the router?: with out this information we can not look up it maximum output over wi-fi. Not everyone has AT&T for service or even able to get that type of service in there area so this information is critical for us to know what equipment you are using.

most older routers do 50 Mbps the next step up is 150 Mbps over this usually using 40 MHz bandwidth (1 primary channel and 1 secondary channel) you get 300 Mbps then you jump a level to 450 Mbps usually spread over 2 frequency's ( 2.4 and 5 GHz) and this goes on for a while, It is important to include the hardware models with your questions of this type. so we can know what you are using. Do Not include MAC numbers as this could jeopardize security.

Here we go!

Depends on your network.

If you have gigabit wired network, it's 1000Mbps or 100Mbps or if it's reeeeeeeally old it's 10Mbps.

If you have a wireless network, it's:
AC = 1300Mbps
N, 5ghz = 400Mbps
N, 2.5ghz = 300Mbps
G = 64Mbps

Those are generalities so keep that in mind, and in real world testing the rarely reach those limits. Your real world use is likely to be 30% lower or more. However your ISP is indeed not responsible for your wireless speed within your home from your router. If they provided it, you can ask them if it's slow for your router's rated speed.
 


FYI those are the maximums for those type of connections. Hence the word generalities being added. So add the words "up to" for those numbers. Most G routers/wireless cards are 50-54 Mbps, N has 2-3 different amounts being 150/300/450 Mbps and much much more. As you can see this can get difficult to tell what a router has with out knowing Brand, model and model number.

This can be looked up by googling what router you have. as mentioned numerous times the amount you actually will get will depend on many factors.

 


802.11n on 2.4g and 5g is the same speed...at least the encoding is. In most houses you actually get a lot less speed on 5g not more because the signal is absorbed.

The rates are nowhere close to 30% lower of those magic numbers. The very best 802.11ac are lucky to get 250m.
 
You must first test using wired connections to be sure there is no problem with the installation that the ISP would need to fix.

On wireless there are way to many variables. Can be any thing from the way the walls in the house are made to the location of the antenna in the devices you are using.

Wireless favors portability over speed. Most times you can do nothing to fix the problems. You could spend lots of money to buy a newer router and newer pc nic card and still not get much improvement.

You at some point have to ask why do you really need more than 50m rates. How many times a month do you actually download huge files and how many total hours does it really save. If you start the download before you go to bed and it takes 2 hours rather than 4 hours does it really matter.

You have well over the speeds you need to do most thing people do on the internet,.

True I mean I don't really need more than that I guess but I would just like to be getting over 100 I guess. My wired speeds are working correctly so I think it's installed correctly. Maybe it could be the walls in my house
 
Do you have a desktop or a laptop that you are using on the wireless connection? To determine whether the walls, wiring, etc. in you house are affecting the wireless signal, move the computer (easier if it is a laptop) as close as you can to the wireless router and do a speed test.
 
What program are you using to test the speeds with? Also is the program displaying the speed in Mbps OR MBps the little b is bit and the big B is Byte. It takes 8 bits to equal a Byte.

Example: if the program reads 50 MB/s then you multiply 50 times 8 and you get 400 Mb/s it is a big difference visually but is the same. Although technically transfer speeds are never referred to as Mega Byte because this is not a data transfer term.

That would point to a WiFi config issue on the router or your PC. Or, simply a crappy WiFi adapter.

Right next to the router should get better than that, all else being equal.

What would you suggest I do? The thing I find weird is that when I first connect to my wifi and test immediately I get 150-200 up and down wireless put within minutes it drops to 40-50 down and up...
