Hi,
I have a low budget gaming pc build:
Mboard: MSI a78m-e35 v2 fm2+ socket
Ram: G Skill 8gb
APU: AMD 7400K (2 core cpu 4 core gpu)
Storage: Seagate Barracude 1TB

I have a spare MSI/Nvidia Geforce GT610 GPU ( 2GB DDr3) and i would like to know if it is worth installing this dedicated gpu or using my apu graphics. I have seen people say dedicated gpus are always better but some other people say apus are better for budget gaming pcs.

Thanks

Solution
Yes installing the GT610 would get you a slight performance gain. By all means, install the GT610, when you have a spare one.
If your CPU was an AMD A10 7800, the AMD GPU would have been a R7 class one and l would have advised you to not install the GT 610. But the AMD 7400K has R5 class graphics and the GT 610 easily beats R5, though not by a high margin.

Ok i have installed it. is it possible to unlock any of the gpu cores and make them cpu cores on my apu now that im not using the built in gpu? or can they not be changed. Also are there any other major changes i should do to improve games on my machine?

Thanks

Tough luck mate. No, you can't make the GPU cores run as CPU cores, though they are integrated on the same die. But as per AMD's HSA (Heterogenous Sytem Architecture), the GPU memory from the APU will contribute to the total video memory of your system.

Something similar with installing a discrete GPU in Intel platform as well, where the CPU's Intel HD graphics twiddle their thumbs.
Hope these equations change soon, and the integrated Intel GPU cores/speed start working in tandem with the discrete units and AMD GPU cores run as CPU cores when discrete GPU is installed.

Ok,
I want to play some good games without paying alot of money. is there a newer apu i can purchase in the future? i have been eying the AMD a8-7650k. if i got this will i get better performance?

Yeah the A8 7650 K will be an upgrade as it is the mid range APU in the Kaveri lineup and comes with a quad core CPU and a R7 class GPU. So while you will get apporx. 30% better performance (say 25% better with the discrete GT 610) . If you are eyeing it, try selling off the 7400 now and get it instead.
It will be a good immediate upgrade but not great as a future upgrade as per price-performance ratio, in my opinion.
For better results, wait for the next line of entry level Zen CPU's from AMD get a decent mid-range discrete DX12 GPU (which will definitely see a price drop as Zen releases).
