I have an i7 3770 paired with a ASUS Sabertooth Z77 and a MSI R9 390.

My question is: For gaming, is it worth it for me to upgrade my CPU, or is the 3770 good enough?

My understanding is that even compared to current top CPUs, the 3770 is not far behind for gaming (only a few fps). Is this correct?

I will not overclock.

Specs:

  • i7 3770
    ASUS Sabertooth Z77
    MSI R9 390 8 GB
    16GB G.Skill RAM 1600
    Corsair TX750
    Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB

What about for slightly beyond 1080p gaming (2560 x 1080)? Will it still be good enough to produce smooth fps?

I am thinking of getting this monitor and I don't know if the computer would still be powerful enough to push 60+ fps at that resolution.

Should be OK, but depends what you are playing and what graphical settings are. R9 390 is one of top tier GPU's in AMD lineup. Going to newer CPU would not give you any significant performance boost.

I have a 3770 paired with a gtx 970, and i play most games high-ultra on 1440p and most games don't use more than 60% of the cpu anyway. I will personally wait for some time. If you don't do professional editing, or tasks that require alot of cpu power you probably don't need a better processor for now. The only game that came to 90% was crysis 3 in the grass level. But that's the only game i noticed that used more than 60%-70% of my cpu. Btw if you upgrade your cpu you will need to upgrade ram and your motherboard too. (if you want the new gen 5th and 6th).

Cheers! :)
