I am trying to update my old computer I got from my uncle from a few years ago. The only thing I really need is to update the processor, but I know I need a new motherboard for that. I looked around and saw that the FX-6300 is both pretty good and at a good price range. The only thing I can't figure out is exactly what is compatible with the motherboard.

If you get a FX6300 then you will, either now or in the future, want to overclock it to get a bit more performance, so I would choose my motherboard with that in mind.

There are quite a few options, which depend a bit on where you are and in what market. The Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3 or DS3P are a great place to start. ASRock, MSI, and ASUS all make decent, inexpensive, motherboards for this purpose.

If you are in the USA and close to a MicroCenter, you may be able to get a really good 'walk-in only' deal.

RAM is practically a commodity. I'd get the cheapest CL/CAS 9 or 10 DDR3 1866Mhz memory I could find.

You need a socket AM3+ motherboard for the FX 6300. Look at 970 chipset motherboards to save some money because you don't really need the 990FX chipset anyways. In terms of the RAM choices, you can go with a value ram DDR3 1600 if you're not concerned about looks. If you wan't a kit of RAM with heat spreaders, I'd recommend G.skill Ripjaws X or Kingston HyperX Fury DDR3 1600 to save money.

If microATX, this MB is unbeatable, just purchased & installed last week!

Here it shows on my PC. fresh install of Windows 10. This MB is low cost, yet feature filled, especially for an AM3+ one.

This was installed on a custom build that was given to me, the prior MB was a Gigabyte that didn't have AHCI for my SSD's, nor UEFI firmware, the latter of which I wasn't looking for, yet a bonus to have. I've ran this PC with this MB for hours on end with Windows 7 Pro before the upgrade, and finally set all UEFI defaults (except Secure Boot) and Windows 10 Pro Rocks on it.

If this were an Intel 1150 Z97 MB with this many features, would had cost upwards of $90. The dual width GPU doesn't block the x1 slot as many does, and if desired, one can run two GPU's.

Like I stated, and I looked for 4-5 days before pulling the trigger, this MB for the mATX is unbeatable. Even if the price was higher. Though I didn't know when ordering, the case could had held a full sized ATX MB, but would had been a very tight fit, as it was tricky to get the mATX MB in there with the PSU & drives in the case. The drives & bay would had to have been removed for the ATX MB, where there may be more options.

My next upgrade will be the FX-6300! :)
