Set up:
CPU: i5 4670k
MB: Gigabyte z87-m
GPU: XFX Radeon 7950 DD
RAM: 8 GB Adata

My CPU is getting up to 100 C when I play games. I'm using the stock Intel CPU heat sink and fan. I checked it for dust and cleaned it as best as possible. Someone suggested that thermal paste dried up. If that's the case, what is the best way to clean it off?

Edit: If I were going to buy a new CPU cooler what would be my best option, closed loop water or copper heat pipes?

I typically scrape the old paste off with a plastic card (credit card, driver's license, etc) and then use rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab to get the rest off. Make sure when you're done that the rubbing alcohol has completely evaporated and that you remove any fuzz from the cotton swab that may have stuck to the heatsink or CPU.

I have a 4770K and I had to get aftermarket cooling as well. The haswell chips are known for running hot because they have crappy thermal interface material between the chip and the heat spreader. I went with the cooler master seidon and haven't had any overheating issues since. I would go with a CLC if I were you dude. My cpu doesn't ever go above 60 C on full load now and it really only gets that hot when I'm doing something like video encoding. when gaming it never goes above 50.

What type of games are you playing? With the tempps like that I'd be worry about my system shutting down.
I have a H100I and my temps never go above 55c on full load.
