I have a Sony Vaio E series with 4 GB RAM, i3-370M 2.40 GHz processor. I have an i5 2.40 GHz processor from a Dell Latitude E6410. Will it be safe to change the processor? (if by chance it fits in the socket.)

Solution
check the exact model. If its from the same generation and power requirements, in theory it should work. But before cracking your machine open, verify that both machine used SOCKETED versions of the chips and not the soldered versions. check cpu-world. I think intel has a utility which can ID the exact CPU part number.

Other issues may be BIOS and cooling, since the "faster" CPU may generate additional heat. I had the E4310 (so same CPU generation as the E6410) and it is get hot fairly quickly without too much stress on the CPU.

IMHO, the if the i5 is also 2.4Ghz, the two processors are about the same in terms of performance. The 6410 should have a first gen core. so its an i5-xxx. So for me its not really worth extra hassle to maybe...

I dont know about the Sony, The dell should be socketed. But it ll take about an hour of carefully peeling apart the machine to get to the Dell one, not sure about the Sony.

You can get the service manual to the dell on their website
