Hello,

I am try to decide between two laptop drives. A Western Digital or Seagate 500GB 7200RPM 2.5" Laptop drive. The drive is a replacement for a blown out Hitachi in a Mid-2012 Macbook Pro.

Here are the Amazon links and posted specs are below:

WD Black 500GB

Specs:

  • 7 mm 2.5-inch drives come with a SATA 6 Gb/s interface.

  • Improved Architectural Designs: Dual Core Processor, High Resolution Controller (HRC),

  • StableTrac Technology

  • Improved Data Protection: Vibration Control Technology (VCT), Corruption Protection

  • Technology (CPT), NoTouch(TM) Ramp Load Technology

  • Industry-leading 5-year manufacturer limited warranty

  • Package includes a hard drive only

and...

Seagate Laptop Thin 500 GB

Specs:

  • Slim and lightweight style with laptop encryption as option

  • Compatible with SATA 6Gb/s and 3Gb/s designs

  • Up to 500GB capacity

  • 7200 RPM options available

  • 2 year warranty

The drives have pretty similar specs just wondering if there is a contrast in build quality or reliability between the two brands. I'm leaning towards the WD as it seems to have the edge in features. The difference in price is not a huge deal, however, as a poor college student $15 bucks in my pocking goes a long way.

Thanks for your help!

Leigh.

NOTE: The description for the WD drive says 3.5", however, according to one reviewer "I just checked the label on the drive I put in my small laptop, and it's definitely this same model, and the same one listed in my order history, but now it's listed as 3.5" for Desktop. I think the description on Amazon has recently been changed; otherwise I wouldn't have noticed this model a few months ago in my search for 2.5" laptop drives." So I would say you can disregard that typo.

Good luck with the installation. SSD prices have come down a lot in the past 3-4 years, but 500GB are still pretty pricey. I remember 15 years ago buying a 12GB laptop HDD for about $100 to replace a 2GB HDD in my Roland VS1680 audio recording workstation.
They are both pretty good drives. For $15 you get 3 extra years of warranty with the WD. Although I have not had a HDD drive fail within the first 5 years, it may be worth the investment.

Edit: One thing to check is whether your laptop supports SATA 6GB/s. I am not a MAC guy so maybe someone else on here knows.

Good point with the SATA 6GB/s. I check that out and or check here again and see if anyone answers.

Yeah, I'm going HDD because of cost. I need the 500GB and SSD is still in the sky at that capacity as far as my budget is concerned.

How the times change. My father tells stories about buying a 768MB external for $300 back when he was publishing in the early Internet. Never thought he would ever fill it up. And to think I downloaded a PDF half that size yesterday.

Thanks for your help.

Much appreciated.
