Hello all,
So I have updated my computer a bit. I have had it for 5 years and its still working great but its starting to lag on some of the new games.

I have a asus P5N-D motherboard with 6g DDR2 memory.

I have replaced the video card from a 512 to a 2gig asus gtx 750ti. I also changed my chassis to a Apevia x-dreamer 4.

So with this new build I thought i would change the PSU from my cooler master real power 550w to a 650w power supply.

I first tried a visiontek 650w. All lights went green, computer started but would not boot. I realized that the PSU had no -5v pin. So i tried an Apevia beast mode 680w PSU, all lights went green but when i hit the power button it only lit up for half a second and shut down.

This PSU has a -5v rating but is less then my original. this PSU also has safety features for short circuit or overpower. Im not sure at this point what to do.

Could anyone give me some help in this matter?

Yeah, that's a fake 550W. It has the +12V specs of a 300W. I can see why you got a new one.
I presume this is the board in question? https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5ND/
The -5V rail is for an archaic voltage that isn't used anymore unless you have a floppy drive or ISA bus cards, so I doubt that is the problem.

I think the first thing I would do is 'breadboard' the m/b outside the case. When you remove...

I think the first thing I would do is 'breadboard' the m/b outside the case. When you remove the m/b, check that you didn't inadvertently add a standoff that wasn't needed. It may be grounding out the backside of the board. That happens quite often. That board will not use every standoff location the case provides.

Then with just the CPU/cooler and RAM installed, connect just the PSU, video card, keyboard, and monitor. Momentarily short the two pins that the case's power button would connect on to start the system. See if you can boot to BIOS.

Yes i tried it and it worked! I positioned the screws in a way and all systems go. But now right before the computer starts loading i get this message.

Warning!! Over current in USB detected!! Remove USB device!!

And then under it is a countdown of 15sec to when the computer will shut off.

I took everything out of the usb ports. I still get the msg.

So i tried unplugging the front usb ports but i get the same problem. I cleaned out the back usb ports and checked for any bending but nothing. I still have the same problem. I tried switching to +5svb for the usb but nothing.

Half the times when i boot the system it stays on the first picture it loads saying press delete to enter setup or tab for bios message. But the keyboard wont work and i tried 2. The other half it load to the next screen and it gives me the warning message about the usb.

Do you think its simply too strong of a power supply? I mean my keyboard and mouse is lit up even when the computer is off lol

I got it!! It finally works.

So the problem was a screw that i took out. This screw was positioned between the usb connecters for the front of the chassis. After i removed it. It booted up no problem! Thank you guys for all the help.

No, it seems to be a leak. A power supply can't be "too strong" - you could plug a 1600W power supply in your system and it'll work normally(just that the power supply will have too much capacity and will cost more than half the rest of the build).

It seems you figured out the short.

Yes but now it seems i have a different problem. Half the times i boot the computer it freezes on the first picture. The other half it loads up to windows loading and it freezes there. Any thoughts?
