First of all I am building for gaming. I want VR capable and high end graphics as well as room to upgrade.
Here is what I have in mind:
I was given a Master Cooler Cosmos 2 case
( still not sure on the mother board Either X99 rampage V Extreme or Maximus VIII Extreme, I'm unclear because of the difference in storage requirements and panhandle graphics car lanes)
Processor: I7-6700k
Memory: 64 GB g-skill Ripjaw (16x4)
Primary storage: this is as far as I am really, I want a lot of primary and secondary storage and I'm willing to pay.
I could use help on the cooling system, power and storage. I'm trying to stay in the $2,800 range. Please Help! thank you so much! Please remember I am far less then a novice.

Solution
For a $2800 build, avoid the Cosmos 2. It looks pretty but the case is massive. I mean it's huge and heavy. And 64GB isn't necessary for anything, even VR. It's a gigantic waste of money for gaming applications. I've been playing GTA V and Fallout 4 on 8GB. You do not need a lot of this stuff. Also, a 6700K won't work in a Rampage V, you would need a 5930K.

Here's how you should do a $2800 build:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($399.99 @ NCIX US)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H110i GTX 104.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($111.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock Z170 OC Formula ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($234.13 @ Newegg)...

That's how I would spend that kind of money on that kind of rig. Having a $300 case, $500 motherboard, and $300 in RAM is not the way to go about spending that kind of money. On anything above $2000, there's smart spending and there's wasteful spending. Smart spending is spending on graphics, while having other high end components that can support those graphics. Wasteful spending is buying the Cosmos II and a Rampage V.

So I should have added the Master Cooler Cosmos II was a gift given to me ( I already have it but nothing in it).
Thank you for the rest of the suggestions though they are very helpful!

While these are both excellent systems, having two GTX 980 TIs would cause a heavy CPU bottleneck, which causes problems like micro-stutter. I would personally recommend a single GPU solution, especially for a first build. To the OP, if you decide to take my advice for a single GPU solution and need more power than a GTX 980 TI, I would recommend sitting on the money for a couple months and wait for AMD and Nvidia to release their new architectures, Pascal and Polaris.

If you decide for a single card build, you wouldn't need a 1000w power supply, in which case, I would recommend the EVGA NEX650G at $82
