Hi - I would appreciate any help with this problem.

This computer works fine generally but when I connect a western digital "My Book" 3 TB backup drive, it won't boot. I get the error message "bios has detected unsuccessful post attempt". This happens regardless of whether the external drive connected to USB2 or USB3 connectors.

I have gone into BIOS and disabled booting from USB and that doesn't help.

As long as if I wait until *after* the computer has booted before connecting it, the external drive works fine, whether plugged into either USB 3 or 2 ports, Drive tests out OK with S.M.A.R.T.

BIOS: Intel Corp. BAP6710H.86A.0064.2011.0504.1711, 5/4/2011
MOBO: Intel DP67DE
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

My ASRock-based system has exact same problem, halts at splash screen if external hard drive is connected (doesn't happen with pen drives).

No amount of BIOS tweaking helps.

So, if the PC is in shutdown state, I have to check external hard drives are disconnected before powering up.

So as you can see, the problem is not unique to Intel boards by any means.

As I almost always put my PC to sleep instead of shutdown, it's no longer an issue for me.

Hi Philip - Thanks for your reply. After I posted my original query, I had a long chat session with Intel tech support and learned a few things. This board is technically no longer supported but the gentleman was kind enough to give some leads. Basically, everything has to do with the fact that older PC technology was not designed to handle and address space bigger that 2 TB. So several things must be upgraded.

I was told that:
1.) UEFI mus be enabled. (if you read about UEFI on wikipedia, it's easy to understand why this might be important.)
2.) must be using a 64 bit OS
3.) drive must be formatted using GPT
4.) it might help to upgrade the board's bios to latest version, but I read the release notes for all versions of the BIOS between the one I have and the latest, and none of the them mentioned anything about booting while connected to a drive greater than 2 TB so I decided not to deal with the hassle & risk of doing the BIOS upgrade.
5.) It might be necessary to install a piece of Intel software called "INTEL USB 3.0 Extensible host controller driver" but that's not entirely clear.
