need better WiFi in my house

current wireless router is in a silly locations. goes thru too many walls, cannot use wifi in my bed.

considering this product to improve wireless capabilities.

current modem is SURFBOARD SBG6580. its terribad. will this antenna improve my signal? will it go thru walls? it has good reviews and isnt expensive so i am considering getting this one. i dont want to spend over $25.

What do you plan to connect it to? The SBG6850 doesn't have an antenna connection. If you have a desktop WIFI card with removeable antenna(s) you could connect it to that. WIFI has too many variables to speculate if this will improve your signal. All you can do is test it in your specific locations.

You should try powerline network adapters.

thanks kane, i didnt realize i couldnt plug the antenna into my SBG6580.

how do powerline network adapters work? unfortunately, my father didnt heed my advice about putting the modem in a central location, so our side yard recieves terrific signals while half of our house gets almost none whatsoever.

the whole thing im trying to avoid is running lines throughout my house, pops wont go for that.

correct me if im wrong, but basically these network adapters work like this...

plug "#1" in close to the modem,
plug "#2" in where the modem doesnt reach,
the two "talk" to each other
and the signal is made stronger in problem areas?

Powerline adapters work like ethernet cable over electrical wires. There ARE some powerline units that have WIFI integrated into them, but the default configuration is to act like wired etherent. You can add a WIFI access point at the far end of a powerline network to provide WIFI to that area.

Look at the powerline networking articles on smallnetbuilder -- http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/tags/powerline You will have a better idea of what powerline is and isn't.

Newer models work most reliably. The keyword to look for is the "AV2" standard. There are some rooms in some houses that powerline doesn't work well. If you purchase from somewhere with a liberal return policy you can protect yourself in those circumstances.

The newest standard units can maintain 100mbit in most cases.
