I am currently upgrading my hard drive and so I bought a new one.

I heard that you are supposed to fully format a hard drive when you first install it to double check that everything is working as it should. However, I knew it would take a while to format because it is a large drive but it has taken over 48 hours to keep telling me that it is formatting.

I would like to tell you I have a rough idea of how far along it is but due to Windows 10 I can't actually see this information for myself, otherwise I may not have needed to make this thread.

Any help would be greatly appreciated but I understand that it is a problem that may not be solvable over the internet through forums.

Thank you

Yeah, as above, you don't need to do a full format.

Though if it's going in something really critical I'd run a couple of full/long SMART tests first, just to burn it in and chop off the front of the 'bathtub curve'.

I could not even quick format it, windows would show an error saying that the drive couldn't be formatted. In the end I accidentally activated CHKDSK by removing and trying different hard drives. This then seemed to solve the problem and it is working much quicker than my old drive. Thank you for the responses and if any body knows how to properly run CHKDSK on startup then that is how I managed to solve it and can they post a response with this solution.
