Could you describe in a easy way, as if it was for a 5 year old, what the cpu actually does?

I am currently going to buy a laptop, and this perticular laptop that i have set my eyes upon has one with Intel Core i5-5200U, 4GB RAM and it cost 40$ more and one with Intel Core i3-5005U, 6GB RAM and is 40$ cheaper, so i don't know if getting the i5 is worth it or if i need it, because i don't know what i would benefit from it.

I may also mention that this is laptop not for gaming, only for school (no heavy programs), movies, series, browsing and so on.

If you're old enough to register a Toms Hardware account, you can certainly do some research on wikipedia article on CPUs and such. All computer programs and operating systems that you can run on a PC or other computing device ("the software") are actually very long columns of instructions that are ultimately reduced down to basic arithmetic and logic operations, and that's what the CPU does for the most part, the same thing a third grader could do, only much faster.

With regards to CPU choice, there is no much difference between the U-versions of Core i3 and Core i5. Both have two cores. i5 can run at faster clock rate, but only for very short period of time. On the other hand, extra memory could be _VERY_ helpful for the kind of person who insists to have 20 tabs open in a web browser.
