CPU overheating even after re-applying thermal paste and updating BIOS

I've had this computer for nearly 4 years now and I've never had a problem related to hardware. That's not until I decided to play a not even demanding game and after 5 mins of playing it my pc shut itself off. From there on my CPU keeps over heating. I've cleaned my HSF, old paste and re-applied paste but nothing has changed

How did you determine the CPU is overheating? AMD Overdrive reports thermal margins below 0°C at full load? If so, how many degrees below 0°C? If only a few degrees, then the CPU overheats, but if they are at a high negative number, then the VRM is protecting itself.
