cpu fan header problem?

Not sure what forum to post this in as I'm unsure what is the source of the problem.

So this morning my PC wouldn't start, and it said "DVI port missing." I troubleshooted that (unplugging dvis, using my vga, and so on) but nothing worked.

When I looked inside my pc I realized the cpu fan wasn't spinning (so not sure why it gave me dvi error). My cpu fan was plugged in a 4 pin header on my mobo. unplugging it than plugging it back in did not work. When I tried putting it in a 3 pin connector the pc ran.

So I assumed my 4 pin header was dead. However, after replugging it in the 4 pin connector the pc is running fine again so I guess I was able to fix it.

My question is it common to have to "replug" your cpu fan into your headers? Why was I getting a dvi error?

No, not normal. I suspect there is a problem, but I can't really say what it is. It may have been a BIOS glitch where a bit didn't set and it got momentarily "confused". If it happens again, you may want to do a BIOS update to a later one if available.

Another possibility is that the PWM fan itself is the culprit.
