i have an Asrock Z97 Extreme 4 and it has 2 dimms of 4gb ddr3 RAM brand: G.skill Tridentx F3-2400C10D-8GTX 8GB (2x4) DDR3 PC3-19200 2400MHZ

i want to reach 16 gb of RAM but my Thermalright true spirit 140 blacks the way to install an additional dimm in slot 1

so i was thinking to get 1x8 gb g.skill, will this be ok with the dual channel of the other two

or should i get two new 2x8?

Solution
2x8GB is the best bet, adding a 1x8GB to your current DRAM offers no guarantees the DRAM will be compatible, if it is and all three sticks will play nice, you can still run all in dual channel with the 8GB stick in slot 2 and the 4GB sticks in slots 3-4
