Hi, I think my power supply is dying on me but I need confirmation before I spend money on a new one. The computer won't start when I press the power button, the fans don't spin or anything. It happened for the first time around a month ago, but then I manged to turn it on after just pressing the button multiple times and waiting and it worked fine when it was on. The second time it happened, it took a lot longer to get it started so I didn't turn the PC off for like 3 weeks and it worked without problems, until I decided to turn it. Now it's happened again and I can't seem to make it run. What else could it be?

I bought my computer about 5-6 years ago. Here's the specs:

AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0GHz AM3
Fortron 460W FSP460-60GHN power supply
Asus M4A77T motherboard
Goodram 4GB RAM DDR3
Asus Radeon HD4850 1GB

Solution
It could be the motherboard, and the 'paper clip' test is a gross test - it does not test the PSU under load.

Since you tried the start button test, test the PSU first before replacing your motherboard.

Just tried it. The computer didn't start up.. Also did the paperclip test on the power supply and it worked, so I guess it's the motherboard?

One more thing. There's a LED on the motherboard that according to instruction manual "lights up to indicate that the system is on, in sleep-mode or in soft-off mode". It's lit up when the power's connected but when I press the power switch it flickers with a dimmer light and then goes back to the same state when I let go of the button.
