Hi there

I recently had to back my windows system onto a hard drive so I used the only one I had which was a 1TB hard drive plugged into the USB port of my laptop like usual but when I had finished with the back up of windows (as I bought a smaller USB stick just for the windows system) I went to use the 1TB hard drive again as normal only it now only recognises it as a 39.9GB hard drive
How do I get my hard drive back to recognising that it's a 1TB hard drive again

Solution
You can't just delete the partition and use it, you need to create a new partition and format it. Open Disk Manager, you should see the disk and volume there as unalocated. Right-click on that drive, create a new partition and format it as NTFS. After that it will be usable.
When you did the backup of Windows, how did you do it? Did you clone it by any chance? From the size of the drive, sounds like what you did. In that case, when you cloned the drive, you made that second drive have the same partition size as the volume of the hard drive you backed up. Take a look at the options of the backup and this time do not clone to the other drive, you can create an image file though, but you'd need to re-create the full disk size as in the post above.

Hi there
Thanks for replying
I did as you said and deleted the partition on the 1TB hard drive
Now it doesn't get recognised at all when I plug it in it doesn't do anything it doesn't even register that it's there under My Computer
Do you have any idea how I now get around this

Had the same problem - Disk Management, reformat the drive with NTFS. Right click and choose Extend Volume which should combine the used and spare volumes together. Hope it makes sense.
