Hello,
Since yesterday my HDD hasn't been detectable on My PC, Disk management or under any of the expand options in Device Manager (in hidden view as well). I have updated, uninstalled all the USB controllers under Universal Serial Bus and restarted but to no avail. I have also reinstalled the Intel Chipset drivers. All I can see is the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller -1.0 (in device manager) pertaining to the USB 3.0 ports I believe... but as I plug in and remove the cable from the USB 3.0 port, there are no changes seen in device manager, other than the sudden refresh.
I have run the troubleshooting wizard for Hardware and Sound multiple times and doing so resulted in the HDD being detected once, on one of the ports but not again. I have tried disabling USB selective suspend under Power Options.
I should also mention that my optical mouse and an external cooling fan works using this port, and when my hard drive is plugged in, it lights up and the buzz from the spinning inside is present.
Hopelessly, I have also tried restarting my laptop after disconnecting my power cable, waiting for a minute and starting again. No result.
One little clue in the puzzle is that the hdd is detected and ready to use to use in perfect working condition on a USB 2.0 port situated on the other side of the laptop. Now when I navigate to Device Manager, I see it listed under Univ. Serial Bus contr. as USB Mass storage. The problem only occurs when plugged into a 3.0.
Another thing, I have also tried plugging it into another laptop on the 3.0 port- it didn't work, but it does on the 2.0.
Till date the HDD was working fine on all the ports until yesterday when it suddenly went incognito.
Is it a power problem, BIOS issue, blown hardware or something unaware on all of the forums on the web? I seriously have exhausted each and every one...

My specs:
Lenovo Y50-70
Windows 10 (a crappy, bug bitten, more flowery Windows 7)

If someone out there can solve this, I commend him with all my heart.
Thank you for reading.

Welcome to the TH community, tejas238!

I'm truly sorry to hear about your struggles with the WD My Passport drive. :( I'd recommend you to try Uninstalling it and Reinstalling as a device from Device Manager. Another thing you should definitely try is using a different USB 3.0 Cable with the external HDD. It's possible that the one you are currently using is faulty and causing you such connectivity problems.
I'd also make sure that you reinstall the USB 3.0 hub controller drivers from the laptop/motherboard manufacturer and make sure that it's specifically for your model and OS version.
Since you can get it detected from the USB 2.0 ports, I'd suggest you run the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from WD's Data LifeGuard...

Hope this helps. Keep me posted.

Finally resolved the issue... After all the intense troubleshooting... *drumroll*

The problem was the weakened contact between the USB wire and the port. :??:
I noticed that the detection was variable.. completely at random sometimes... Then with one insert, I noticed the whole metal prong wasn't going in. Checked inside and saw broken plastic (the blue plastic from the UBS 3.0 had come off somehow).
Thanks a lot for your input anyways!

Have a good day!
