Hello there :) Just a quick one.

I've decided to upgrade to Skylake as my machine now is a bit tired. Advice would be much
appreciated.

Upgrading from this :

2x Crucial BLT4G3D1869DT2TXOBCEU 4GB Ballistix Smart Tracer Memory
MSI FM2-A75IA-E53 AMD FM2 Mini-ITX Motherboard (Socket FM2)
AMD A10 5800K Black Edition CPU (3.8GHZ, 4MB Cache, 4 Core, HD7660D, Socket FM2, 100W)
Corsair Hydro Series H100i
Corsair 380T case
MSI R9 280 3GB
Corsair Builder Series CXM 500W Modular 80 PLUS Bronze

I'm thinking :

Intel Core i5 6600K
Asus Z170I Pro Gaming (Or suggestions?)
HyperX Fury Black Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) 2133 MHz DDR4 (Again open to suggestions)

Keeping the 380t case and h100i. Also adding an SSD along with existing 1TB HDD

Power supply, I'm going to take it that it's not up to the job? If not then I'll buy the :

EVGA Supernova 650 W Gs Gold 80+ Modular

I'm limited in size an originally looked at the 850W, but from what I've gathered it's a larger unit than the 650W therefore not compatible with my case.

GPU although not that old I'm thinking will need attention in the near future. Now try doing all this on a budget while building a new house. The beauty is that the new parts will be in the same case and the wife won't have a clue. Just need to hide the bills.

Is there anything you'd change or recommend? Would I get away with the existing GPU?

Best regards

If the extra money is not a real bother, I suggest you go ahead and buy the 6700K.
If you do not, you will forever wonder if you should have.

Thank you for the replies :) that's a handy chart. So do you think it's possible to limp by on the current PSU with the new bits until the Pascal GPU's come about?

Recommended wattage for the R9 280 is 550w, although I've also read that 500w is acceptable, looks like I'm right on the limit :) Would be my luck for it to fail after adding the new bits.

Thanks again for the replies. It hasn't let me down this far, but I did have in my mind that it may become problematic. Will order the 650w to be safe.

I think it's time now to strip down and sell the old bits to soften the blow :)

The CX line is not as bad as it is made out to be.
Yes, there seems to be more chance of failure, but Corsair is very good about a RMA.
And, unlike really cheap power supplies, it seems to have sufficient protective circuitry to prevent damage.

If you are uncertain about your future graphics upgrade, I would defer on the psu until you have that nailed down. It is the graphics car that largely determines what psu you need.

I expect the next gen of graphics cards from nvidia and amd to be less power hungry, so 650w should handle anything short of dual cards.

Cheers for the reply.

I'm certain now on the i5 6600k, I did look at the i7 but it would probably be a waste. I'm also happy with the choice of board, seem's to be a popular choice.

I'm also gonna proceed with the EVGA Supernova 650 W, it get's it done and out of the way. It should keep me well powered for a few years.

Just the ram now, for not much more I can buy : G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series F4-2400C15D-16GVR 16 GB (8 GBx2) DDR4 2400 MHz. Is it worth giving the extra few quid for faster ram?

I'm so out of touch now with some of the latest components (That's why I'm here) :) I think I'm almost there though. Just to choose an SSD.

Edit : SSD choice probably the SanDisk SSD PLUS 240 GB Sata III. This will be my first SSD, I'm guessing when I'm setting up to put windows/apps on the SSD, keep the HDD for the rest? :)

Just noticed that the EVGA PSU is 165mm in length. According to Corsair the absolute death is 160mm. My current PSU is 160mm and to be fair it was pretty tight in there against the HDD cage. There's one build on part picker with a 380t and 165mm EVGA. Guy says it just about fits. Don't know now if I should start looking at something shorter.

Part picker doesn't flag up any incompatibility issues with the bigger PSU, so maybe I'm fussing over nothing.

The 550 is 150mm :)

Edit : Wait my head is in a spin lol, I'm getting the G2 and GS mixed up, the GS is 150mm in length according to EVGA's website, but shows as 165mm on Amazon. The G2's seem to be slightly longer. Time for bed

Guys, sorry to be a pain. So far I've ordered ram. Got a good deal on Crucial Ballistix Elite 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR4 2666. I've been shopping around for the 6600k and Asus board. One retailer has a bundle offer on the board I want and the 6700k and it has me tempted.

I know the question is asked a lot, but in your opinion is it worth giving the extra for the 6700k? We're talking £100 more. It never ends I suppose, if you keep giving a little more where does it stop :)
