Hey Guys :)

I have a 500GB HDD Installed on my laptop. My OS (C:) Drive says it has 444GB Which I would respectively consider 500GB. So does that mean my C Drive is based on my HDD? So If I upgrade my HDD to 1TB, will my OS (C:) Drive also upgrade to respectively 1TB in storage space aswell?

Let me know guys because this has been a question for me for quite a while.

Cheers :)

Solution
So then....we're missing nothing here.
What was the question?

If you were to clone that C partition to a 1TB drive, it would be ~356.91GB used out of 931GB space.

you will have to reinsall you os though. hence a new HDD is fully blank so you would need a way of getting OS on to the one T hdd.
When you say OS we talking bout like OS like lion or OS like windows? it just reads funny

Hard disk companies always lie about the exact size of hard disks. They count 1000 bytes per kilobyte but the actual number is 1024. It adds up. So for an example an Xbox one with 1 Terabyte drive is actually just 800 gigabytes or so. Hence the discrepancy.

i dont think that is what he is asking.. i could be wrong.
but he already seems to know the 500gb = reality 444 gb or what not with os and backup from /recovery laptop files ..
like i said it reads very funny.
but i also know acer e.g has hidding hdd driver for recovery (i nuke em evey time cause they also mess with MRB and i have recoveries on a thumbdrive on a keychain) other times it really is as mamsan2000 said you 1000 but after formating and converting byte from bit -1024 *1000 which is also describe on the box cause im sure someone got sued over it it does end up reading less. 0.97 + what it takes up for formating.. anyone know 0.97tb for a 1TB disk that you buy. unformated and no windows or recover or hidden partion.

my 1 t drive all said and done 931.5mb on there to be used so it uses like 40 mb for partioning and 30mb 0.97to 1t =30 for" selling linguistics" so a total of +8mb for standerd MBR so a totale of 78mb altoger is being jipped from you before you even order it then comes 20 gigs of windows,, or OS or what ever+ back up..

but in all actallualtiy of of mine im missing in TT on 78mb and i can live with that comeing from a 1t hdd.

Disk Management, not Explorer.

Anyway...you probably have a hidden recovery partition on there. Maybe 20GB or so.
A drive with printed 500GB on the case might be ~470GB, depending on what tool is telling you this.

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools
copy past that in my computer or "above all those folder in the screenshot"
then hit computer management

then on the bottom

disk management

and click on "disk 0" an you will see the hidden partition there.

fyi there is no way of safly getting rid of it without:
a) a fresh reinstall of windows(with a usb drive and hirens boot disk)
B) a risk of total data loss
c) a risk a messing up your "master boot record" (e.g that thing where it says failed to detect boot disk)
if you have and 8 gig + usb thumbdrive and don't mind losing data then then go for it.
other wises it might not be worth the trouble.
