Hello,

Would it be worth upgrading my dedicated server that I use for my game servers to a Xeon 1240v5? Is it worth paying an extra £30 monthly?

Cheers.

Assuming you rent a server and the company would just port everything over to a new machine then I'd still say no. It's a move from a 3.0GHz 4C/4T part to a 3.5GHz 4C/8T part. An upgrade to an i7-4790K would actually be better, this isn't even a 4430 to 4790 upgrade so at 30GBP more per month, that makes no sense to me.

I am looking into this now with the company, I will get back to you.

EDIT: They would replace the Motherboard and RAM if necessary

Why not just put an I7-4770/4790 in your current system. The Xeon is essentially an I7 with a little extra cache and no graphics. That way you can keep you motheboard and RAM (Skylake requires DDR4). Check your motherboard manufacturers website to see which I7's your board supports.

It would help to know what you're doing with you system to know if upgrading from an I5 to an I7 is even worth it.
