What do I need to run 3 monitors at 1080p with max settings and 60 fps?

My current build: i5 4690k, gtx 970, 8gb ram, 1tb hdd, 500 watt PSU. I plan to upgrade my mobo and PSU for overclocking and 3-way SLI because I want to have 3 1080p rimless monitors for gaming. I want to play modern games on ultra (witcher 3 and no man's sky when it comes out) at decent frames: Above 40-50. Would 1 overclocked 970 run 3 monitors just fine? They are not 2k or 4k, just 1080p. At the moment I am only getting 1 but I will get 2 more in the future. Would I benefit from a second graphics card? Or 3? Or should I simply overclock it with a better PSU? Do I need more RAM as well? I only have 2 RAM slots at the moment in my current Mobo.

Many thanks in advance!! :)

5760x1080 is too much to run at max settings on a GTX970. That being said, with lower settings it's definitely an option. Maybe aiming for 60fps is a bit much on certain games, but you'd hit 30 easily on all games. 2 GTX970s could probably run all games at high to ultra settings with those 3 monitors at 60fps.

well more vram in the gpu helps.... if u chose the 390 instead of the 970 it wouldve been a better option...
basically what u can do is get another monitor and see whether there is a fps drop when using both monitors... if so and if it a huge one another 970 would be fine

I already got the 970 and the 390 would have been out of budget cause I got the 970 on offer for 250 quid. I was going to get another 970 when the price goes down or if I can find one on Ebay. Many thanks for the advice!

Btw, in this case, more memory wouldn't be what you need for 99% of the games. You'd need the processing power and the speed of a 980ti or a Fury X to really be able to run at that resolution with max settings and 60fps.

What he said ^^^^^ <3

I added a second 970 after I switched panels did wonders. That said if you sold your gtx 970 at say £200-£220 add to it the cost of a new 970 say £260 you are a whisker away from from a 980 ti with none of the issues of sli less fans less noise its kinda what I wish I'd done although i do love my Sli 970s dont get me wrong.

Thanks guys! I got 1 1080p monitor (rimless 24 inches) and it is amazing and stunning! My 970 handles it very well. I think I might get a GTX 980 instead of 2 970's for 3 monitors because then I would have to upgrade my motherboard and PSU and then I might as well make a new system which I want to avoid. Many thanks for all the advice! :)

A 980 won't be enough for that resolution if you want 60 FPS and ultra settings either. If you want one card you will need a 980 Ti.

I have SLI 970s which are slightly better than one 980 Ti. I play at 2560x1440 which is much fewer pixels than 5760x1080. I have to turn some settings down a bit in some games to hold 60 FPS and I have more GPU power than a 980 and less pixels to drive.

I am very happy with the performance of my SLI 970 setup paired with an i5-4690k @ 4.4GHz and 16GB of RAM. I can have all settings maxed with 60 FPS in many new games and 60 FPS with some settings tweaks in every game but I cannot get 60 FPS with maxed settings in every game.

You will not get the performancefrom 1 980 that 970 sli gives you. Go have a look on you tube joker productions 970 sli vs 980 and you will see the results for your self. I wouldn't be confident that a single 980 would run 3 panels at 60hz with a decent refresh rate at 1080p
Sli 970 are closer to a 980 ti which I think would be the best choice of single card for team green at least

For these resolution and a single card, Team green has 2 cards that can make it, the GTX980ti and the GTX Titan X. The Titan X is too expensive for 95% of the market and that's even more true with the 980ti being cheaper while performing better. Nobody needs 12gb of GDDR5, trust me. Team Red has 1 single card I would recommend for triple monitors and that's the Fury X.

Choosing between the 980Ti and the FuryX is tough, in my opinion. On one side, the 980Ti performs better in most cases, it has 6gb of Vram and it's an NVidia card, so not too many driver issues. On the other hand, the FuryX is technically faster, it's the first card made with HBM, which has a memory interface at 4096-bits and a proper DirectX 12 support.

It's anyone's bet, are the games going to become too large for a 4gb card like the FuryX, or are devs going to make use of that super-wide memory bus in a different way and stop using always more Vram? Is AMD actually going to fix it's driver issues and gain some of it's dignity back? Will NVidia's Pascal series be as awesome as they said it was going to be or is it going to be another Kepler?
