Currently i'm facing some issues in running my hdd SG st31000524as it is only 4yrs 1-2 months
old and started giving problems from last year as 7200.12 of seagate is popular for being non reliable

I want new drive as my current boot drive is WD 320 gb (6-7 yrs old and running so smooth)
And windows started giving notifications of disk failure OF Sg one
So I need new drive for storage purposes. In my case longer life span is more imp

so need to know does portable drives may have more life as compared to internal ones
of same price range

Or I should go with WD Blue with confidence, as i'm betrayed by SG

(Ur comments for my current drives are also welcome)

Solution
The problem with hard drives and reliability is that although some specific models are known for lower reliability than others, hard drives seem to have a much wider range for common failures than most other components. I can buy two hard drives of the same model at the same time and one lasts for ten years while the other dies the week after I get it. There's really no confidence to be had that it won't fail. Such are the woes of relying on metal disks spinning very quickly to store large amounts of data.

However, I will say that most WD Blue and Black models tend to have better reviews overall than some other models, so if you want at least a better chance at the drive working right for a long period of time, that's a good place to...
It depends what you mean by "portable". If you mean a 2.5" drive, then they're generally a bit more resistant to shocks, because they're designed to be in laptops, which get bumped, etc. Otherwise, having owned a few WD external drives and seen the model number of the disk, they're just a standard desktop drive in a case ...

Make of it what you want, but IIRC Seagate consumer desktop drives carry a 1 year warranty, WD's carry 2 years (Blue) or 5 years (Black) ...

As for internal vs external, they're the exact same hard drives, so it doesn't make a difference. External drives might have a case with more padding, but that's because they have a better chance of getting dropped than a drive that's screwed or latched into a bay in a desktop case. They're still the same drives, just with a SATA to USB or w/e adapter between them and your computer's USB or w/e port.

Solution
also in a few years when cost for ssd drops most pc and laptops wont use drives with moving parts. for now if your looking for data drive with long life spend the extra for a server try drive (red) or black wd drive. the cheaper the drive..the cheaper the parts in the drive. the older drives were built beter then todays drives.
