hi, i have a 10 year old desktop and only plays 720p movies. It can't play 1080p movies and 720p and 1080p you tube videos ( the internet speed is ok because my new desktop can play all these, 6.8 mbps is the speed)
The pc is:
windows 7 pro 32 bit
motherboard Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. 8I945PLGE-RH (Socket 775)
cpu Intel Pentium D 805 2,44 ghz
video card 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS (Gigabyte)
ssd 111GB KINGSTON SV300S37A120G ATA Device (SSD)
ram 2gb 667 mhz
400w psu
This pc i think can't have an upgrade but only the graphics card i think can help.
i want to ask if with a new video card and the rest the same can this pc 100% play 1080p movies AND 1080p youtube videos?? And if someone know from personal experience that this can be done. Finally are there any other ideas that i've missed that this could be done??
thank you

Solution
Well, mine's 8 years(this May), and it's this:

Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz(slightly faster than the D, but comparable).
Acer E945GCZ motherboard with 2GB(667MHz) of RAM
NVIDIA Geforce 210 1GB
Corsair CX430 PSU

It's reasonably similar to yours, and it plays 720p and 1080p videos smoothly(I have a 1080p Dell monitor). Although, if you use Chrome, use the h264ify extension(link). It'll cut down on your CPU usage on YouTube.

I had a GTX 650 in there for a while, and it ran old games fine(LA Noire, GTAIV, Batman Arkham City, NFSHP2010 - all had the CPU as a bottleneck).

The RAM's way too low for this age, but it does work as a HTPC. And you NEED a graphics card or even videos from disk will stutter. The card will handle the videos, the old...

I would go to 4GB RAM. The OS can use 3 and the GPU uses the rest. See if there are any CORE 2 Duo or Quads it supports, fast Core2s are $10-15, and Q6700 $20-25. Cooling should be OK the Pentium D was 130W chip. Make sure you have latest BIOS. My Dell E520 was a P4, PD era computer. It's 9 years old. If your lucky it will support 65nm quads like mine. QX6700 $40 can O/C to 3.2GHz. easily.
