I just built a new computer for my friend. I have some experience with it. He was playing a game earlier today and noticed that the CPU got up to 89 degrees. That's definitely not normal, especially considering he has an aftermarket cooler.

I'm trying to determine whether this was an assembly error or if the fan/heatsink is bad. There were a few things that I noticed while assembling his computer that might be causing this.

1. I used a bit more than a pea-sized bit of thermal paste, and it did not land square in the middle. The paste came out a lot faster than I expected.
2. We slightly moved the fan/heatsink after placing it on the CPU. This is because we had some trouble getting the screws into the mounts.

I worry it may be the heatskin/fan for a few reasons:

1. The fan/heatsink looked like it was leaning as if it were bent out of shape. I don't know if that's normal or not. I don't believe I've seen that before.
2. Some of the fins were bent but not touching.

I suppose my question is whether a leaning fan is normal and whether that could be causing this.

Solution
Bent fins aren't going to spike the temps like that. And unless you put a crap ton of thermal paste on there, then that isn't going to be the issue either. I'd take the heatsink off, see how the paste spread out. If it looks decently even then just put the heatsink back on and when you tighten it down, don't tighten one screen all the way down and then move on to the next. Tighten each corner down evenly.

Also, check to see that the fan on the heatsink is blowing the correct direction ie through the heatsink.
