help with cpu selection and difference

I am going to build a skylake system. My usage would be some office work(documents), browsing, watching movies and gaming(my son).

I was thinking i7 6700k. Just now I came across i5 6600 which is only £155 on sale. I understand the difference between k and non k version. I don't think I would be overclocking. I know that on stock speed with turbo boost i5 6600 and i5 6600k will run at 3.9 ghz and i7 6700k will run at 4.2ghz.

So how much difference i7s 300mhz extra clock and 8mb i7 cache vs 6mb of i5 cache, would make on performance. Is extra £150 on i7 worth for me or not?
Budget is not a problem but I don't want to waste the money if there is not much benefit.
My gpu would be nvidia 980 or 980ti.

The advantage of the "k" model CPU is that you can overclock to boost speed beyond that of turbo if necessary (for gaming performance, future proofing or other unforeseen need). Overclocking can also be used as a learning device for your child (age dependent) to get an understanding of what is going on in the PC itself and relationships between components.
For the Core i5-6600k CPU I'd recommend a Z170 board which will allow for overclocking. Outside of the desire for 5+ USB ports (virtually all Z170 boards will have at least that many) I'm unaware of your wants for connectivity etc. so I'm hesitant to recommend a particular motherboard

As far as Thunderbolt connectivity, I'm not seeing the need in your uses. IMO, it could be good for...

For your uses the Core i7-6700k would be unnecessary and a bit of a waste since the additional virtual cores offered by hyper-threading would go unused. The Core i5-6600k would be ideal IMO but the locked version would also work if the price difference is significant

Price difference is £45. I don't mind paying the higher price if there is extra benefit. my current system is dell 435mt with i7 920, which is 6 year old, even i5 4460 beats it.

Another question is about mobo, I am confused about mobo. I would be installing windows 7 for the time and may be upgrade to windows 10 later. main confusion is about thunderbolt. Should I go with gigabyte intel thunderbolt? Can you recommend a decent mobo for my needs. I would need atleast 5 usb ports on the back. At the moment all my peripherals are usb 2.0

I can see your point about k version. Although you can overclock non k version now but it is not same as overclocking k version. My son is 12 and he is already playing games like star wars battlefront(reason I am upgrading my system as my current dell system struggles, had few bsod's, can not utilise the power of i7 920 on dell mobo) and he is also doing some coding as well. Definitely he can play around and learn few more things. So it is going to be the i5 6600K version then.

I had decided to go with z170 board after reading other peoples threads. Only problem is that more you read more confusing it becomes because of different advice. I have shortlisted 7 mobos in three different categories.
1. Gigabyte Z170 Gaming 7 or Asus Z170 ROG Hero
2. Gigabyte Z170 Gaming 5 or Asus Z170 ROG Ranger
3. Gigabyte Z170 XP SLI or Asus Z170A or Pro Gamer

I understand Gigabyte Gaming 7 does not have any usb 2 port. Would that be a problem to install windows 7?

Can you please help me to choose between these mobos?

Thanks C12Friedman. I think more I read other peoples posts and reviews more confusing it becomes. I have dropped xp sli and gaming 7( no usb 2.0 on back panel) from my list. Despite your advice Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 5 EU model is appealing more to me. What do you think? Is there a reason to go with asus hero than gaming 5.

Rest of the things I have lined up are
i5 6600k
G Skill ripjaw trident 3000mhz 16gb(8x2)
Nanoxia Deep Silence 1
Evga Supernova G2 750
Cooler master hyper evo 212.
Graphic card asus strix 980
For the time would be using existing optical drives and Wd blue 1tb HDD and later on I would get a ssd.

What do you think. do I need to change anything.

Upto now I have purchased only dell, hp desktops, as there was never any need for me to experiment being a non gamer. Now a days kids are much more smarter and this self build idea came from him. I am going to go ahead with the chosen specc and see how long before he breaks/burns it.
I am going to choose your cpu suggestion as best answer as that was the original question.
