Do I need to use RAM from the tested memory list?

I'm looking to replace my aging HP proliant DL320 G5p, as I need more RAM (FreeNAS is a memory hog) and an 8GB kit for that server is like $100. Not worth it for the hardware. I'm on a tight budget, and I'm going with an LGA1156 board, since 1155 xeons are about 5x the price. I like the Supermicro X8SIL-F or one of the many nearly identical ones on eBay. Now, I'm having a hard time finding the memory from the tested memory list. Can I just buy some 1066 or 1333 registered ECC DDR3 and use that, or do I really need to find the stuff on the tested list?

Can I just use something like this:

Solution
Motherboard vendors don't validate all possible RAM kits. You can go to the vendor site and see if they claim support. At least that way, if it doesn't work, you can RMA it.
