Hi All, I have 500 GB Hard Disk with Windows XP with no Partition. I want to install Windows 7 on it without formatting the Hard Drive as it has many Licenced Softwares installed on it that i don't want to delete. I want to install window Separately. can i make a logical Partition for the hard disk and install OS on in the blank portion on the hard Disk without loosing the installed Softwares. Please Suggest....Thnx in Advance

Yes you can do that.
I'm not sure if winxp diskpart utility allows shrinking of a partition.
You may need 3rd party partitioning software for that.

Then shrink winxp partition;
create new partition in freed up space (I suggest giving win7 partition at least 50GB of disk space)
then install win7 in newly created partition.

No. Windows 7 does not "update" windows XP. It will only do clean install.

However, windows Vista will upgrade XP. You could obtain a Windows Vista disk. Perform an upgrade of your XP install to Vista, then upgrade Vista to windows 7.

I have no idea what the end result of such an experiment would be, so be sure to backup your XP drive before attempting.

You can create a partition like SkyNetRising says.

But you run the risk of damaging your partition, which could be a big problem for you.

So what you can do is.. Make a back up of all your stuff, and then try make the partition.
And it could work.

Is it not possible to backup your data, and write down the licences for your software, then format into a fresh Windows 7?
This would be your absolute best option.

But if it's not possible for you to format at all, backup your data, then try create the partition for Win7
