Hi all,
just a quick couple of questions.
I have a Buffalo LS-WXL704, LINKSTATION DUO set up in Raid 1 (Mirror) with 2x2TB WD Green Drives (wd20EARS-00MVWB0) Installed a few years ago.

On reflection WD Green for NAS wasn't the best solution.

All was working well, until I received an email response from my NAS Saying
" DISK Error Notification

Disk(s) the error occurred:"Disk 2"

An error occurred in the 2th hard disk.
Replace 2th hard drive.

[LinkStationInformation]
LinkStationName: LS-WXL704 (LS-WXL)
Time: 2016/02/02 04:10:06"

I can still access all my data but not sure if I trust the failed drive.

1. if i replace with a WD Red 2TB 3.5 will it be compatible.
2. if i replace the failed drive will i need to erase all the data and start again or will it re mirror automatically.

The Data is important so i will be backing it up before i start anything just in case.

Hey there, jaycopes.

Sorry to hear about the problems you're having with one of your drives. Just as you've already mentioned, go ahead and backup all of your important data first!
Basically as long as the 2nd drive is the same size as the 1st one or larger, you should be able to rebuild the RAID. However, it's always recommended that you do that with the exact same model - same size, same firmware, etc. This is due to the risk of the enclosure rejecting the 2nd drive, which would mean that it doesn't allow you to rebuild the RAID setup.

So the bottom line is this - I'd suggest that you either get the exact same model of WD Green drive as the 1st one in the enclosure, or backup your data and get 2 WD Red drives (if you want to switch...

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

That's great,
think i will have to get 2 red drives can't get the exact green in this country anymore

Sure thing.
I understand. I don't want you to feel like you definitely "have to" do that. As I've already mentioned, it probably will work either way, but if your budget allows it and you don't mind it, it would be best to create the RAID setup with 2 identical HDDs. After you've already backed up the data of course.
Btw, I know you've mentioned that you've had it for a few years, but since I'm not sure for how long exactly, you can check the warranty of your WD Green drive here: Check your Warranty Status. If it's still under warranty you should be able to RMA it.

Don't hesitate to ask if anything else comes up. :)
