Hi guys. Kind of a weird situation and I need your help. Please read on.
I usually buy broken laptops, gaming consoles, desktops, LED monitors etc refurb them and then resell them.
Recently, I came across a Sony VAIO which has been previously tampered with by other people and has been upgraded from it's basic specs.

The problem is, this laptop has an ethernet port which does not fit the motherboard.
The ethernet rj 45 jack has a m970 cable with a 8 pin connector. The motherboard, which is a M961
MP has an ethernet port with only 6 pin outlet.

When I disassembled the laptop, the ethernet port connector wasn't even connected to the board, which is obvious because it didnt fit.

I'm not sure whether whoever upgraded it changed the usb port or the motherboard itself. Probably the motherboard was changed because it was an upgrade from i3 to i5.

In any case, could anyone tell me what part I need to fix this problem?
A new ethernet port for this 961 motherboard? Does anyone know the part name or number?

Here are the pictures.

As you can see the M970 cable does not even fit the board.

The M961 cable that I found on ebay has the bigger pin holes but still has 8 slots instead of 6 which is on the board that I have.

I think you'll have better luck sourcing the part by searching for the Vaio model number rather than the part number. Most of the parts I have found for Vaio's (and other laptops) have been listed by the laptop's model number with no mention of actual part number anywhere in the listing

Don't think you read thoroughly, the laptop is already 'upgraded' from it's original specs so it has a motherboard of a different laptop model than what it was equipped with. I also have no idea which model of Sony has this variant of M961 motherboards.

I read very thoroughly and understood. What I am saying is that even if the motherboard was changed, it is not with a substantially different model or the motherboard would not fit the chassis. Laptop motherboard swaps are almost exclusively done within the same series and within the series the parts (cables, screens, etc.) tend to be alike. Try it rather than simply dismissing it as being incorrect or inapplicable. I'm almost positive you'll find what you're looking for that way.

Do not be offended, I did not mean to do that.

The motherboard is 961_MP_MB MBX 224

But the board on this particular model was 970_MP_MB (Which I do not have right now)

Now, what could possibly different between the two boards, in my opinion either of these boards used a Separate Lan board, which is very common in older Vaio series.
Right now I am not sure what to do or what to look for and any help would be welcome.

As far as searching by original model number goes, I've already done that.

From what I have gathered the M961 motherboard was used in the PCG 61212T model. But I am not sure. But I have not found a lan port / jack / lan board for that model yet. Whatever I did, didn't match the 6 pin requirement.

So if someone could tell me which model / family the M961 board belongs to then I might be able to trace it's parts.

EDIT -

After a lot of research (online) I have found out that the M961 motherboard was used/shipped with the following model numbers:

PCG 61212T / 61211L - VPCEA25FB / VPCEA45FL

I am 100% confirmed that this board was definitely shipped with VPCEA45FL

Now I need the part number list for this model. Can anyone help?

Sorry, didn't mean to sound annoyed, I have played with a few discards but, never a Frankenstein like you appear to have. Here's what I'm concluding, it is a header for an RJ11 harness since there are only 6 pins (possibly a modem card?) and every RJ45 harness I've found has been 8 pin (regardless of model searched for)

These are actually pretty common. The old i3 processor gets upgraded to an i5 gets more ram but in the process small connectors like these don't work.

On the entire board there is only 1 8pin socket and if I remember correctly there was nothing there was connecting to it. I'd have to reassemble everything just to be sure.

That socket is on the rear side of the board which is why I never thought it could be the connector for the ethernet port.
So it's either THAT or a modem board / lan card.

I still have to get a new ethernet jack (M961 rj45 cable) to do this test. The one currently on the 'shell' is too short and the pin holes are too small to possibly fit in there.
